When it comes to Pokémon starters, most fans immediately think of popular names like Charmander, Froakie, or Rowlet. However, not every starter receives the recognition they deserve for their true power. Some Pokémon are often overlooked simply because they are less famous than their peers, even though their fully evolved forms have the strength to become key team members.
Here are five starters considered the most underrated in Pokémon history.
Bulbasaur
As the very first Pokémon in the National Pokédex, Bulbasaur holds a special place in the Pokémon brand’s history. Yet, when players pick starters in Kanto, most tend to choose Charmander or Squirtle instead.
Charizard’s immense popularity often overshadows Bulbasaur, even though Venusaur is actually one of the strongest Grass-type Pokémon in the first generation.
Once evolved, Venusaur boasts excellent defense, impressive endurance, and can maintain its strength in long battles. Despite some type weaknesses, it remains a reliable “tank” that many players unintentionally overlook.
Snivy
Snivy is one of the most underrated starters from Generation 5. This Grass-type Pokémon is often passed over in favor of Tepig and Oshawott. Tepig gains attention by evolving into Emboar, a powerful Fire/Fighting type, while Oshawott remains popular despite some controversy over Samurott’s design.
This leaves Snivy and its evolutions, especially Serperior, less chosen. Its pure Grass typing also leads many to believe Serperior lacks the versatility needed for an optimal team.
In reality, Serperior is a very fast Pokémon with solid defense. Beyond Grass attacks, it can learn Dragon-type moves like Dragon Tail, Dragon Pulse, Outrage, and Breaking Swipe, making it effective against many pseudo-legendary Pokémon. With a speed-focused and strategic playstyle, Serperior is far more valuable than commonly thought.
Fennekin
Fennekin is one of the least noticed starters from Generation 6, often living in the shadow of Chespin and Froakie. Chespin evolves into Chesnaught, a Grass/Fighting type with strong defense and steady offense, while Froakie becomes Greninja, one of the most famous Pokémon ever thanks to its speed, power, and Water/Dark typing.
Because of this, Fennekin is rarely a top choice. However, players who stick with it are rewarded when Braixen evolves into Delphox at level 36.
Delphox has a Fire/Psychic typing and very high special attack, allowing it to use a wide range of powerful moves to overwhelm opponents. Despite some type weaknesses, Delphox is a formidable “mage” when built with the right strategy. Its witch-inspired design also makes it one of the most unique and distinctive starters in the entire Pokémon series, though it remains underrated by the community.
Popplio
Popplio is one of the lowest-rated starters from Generation 7. Compared to the other Alola starters, this Water-type Pokémon is often not the preferred pick. Rowlet impresses with its evolution into Decidueye, a Grass/Ghost type with a unique design and versatile fighting style. Meanwhile, Litten evolves into Incineroar, a Fire/Dark powerhouse known for its strength.
As a result, Popplio is often overlooked despite its strong potential. When it evolves into Primarina, it becomes one of the few Water/Fairy types, giving it many resistances and only a few weaknesses.
Primarina has very high special attack and can unleash powerful moves capable of quickly defeating opponents. While its speed isn’t remarkable, its firepower and diverse move set make it a formidable choice. Its design, inspired by a mermaid and sea lion, also makes Primarina one of the most elegant and memorable starters in the series.
Sobble
Sobble is one of the most debated starters from Generation 8. From the start, this Water-type Pokémon was overshadowed by Grookey and especially Scorbunny. Scorbunny earned praise by evolving into Cinderace, a strong and highly effective fighter, while Sobble sparked division due to Inteleon’s spy-themed design, which differs from traditional Pokémon styles.
However, don’t let Inteleon’s appearance fool you. It is one of the best Water-types in Gen 8, with high speed and exceptional special attack. Inteleon’s fighting style fits its sniper image perfectly, delivering precise and powerful strikes.
Its signature move, Snipe Shot, has a high critical hit rate, allowing Inteleon to take down foes quickly. It also has a diverse skill set including Dark Pulse, Shadow Ball, and Ice Beam, enabling it to handle a wide range of opponents. Although it doesn’t have as many fans as Cinderace, Inteleon is an excellent choice for players who enjoy fast, special-attack-focused gameplay.
