After more than 25 years alongside fans, Ash Ketchum has traveled through numerous regions, caught dozens of Pokémon, and finally reached the pinnacle of the world by winning the Masters Eight Tournament. Throughout this journey, each region featured a key Pokémon that helped Ash overcome many tough opponents, from Gym Battles to Pokémon League tournaments.
Here are the strongest Pokémon Ash has had in each region he has visited.
Kanto – Pikachu
Although Charizard was Ash’s ace early on, looking at his entire journey, Pikachu stands out as the strongest Pokémon in Kanto and his most important partner.
Not only does Pikachu have exceptional speed and power, but it also achieved incredible feats like defeating Brock’s Onix with Thunderbolt, taking down Tapu Koko, Regice, and Latios. Its greatest moment was beating Leon’s Charizard at the Masters Eight Tournament, playing a crucial role in Ash becoming the world champion.
Johto – Heracross
Ash didn’t have a single dominant Pokémon in Johto, often rotating between Pikachu, Bayleef, and Cyndaquil. However, Heracross stood out thanks to several outstanding performances.
At the Silver Conference, Heracross played a major role in helping Ash defeat Gary Oak, ending one of the most famous rivalries in Pokémon history. Its strong defense and powerful attacks made Heracross a reliable ace whenever Ash needed it.
Hoenn – Sceptile
If you had to pick Ash’s signature Pokémon in Hoenn, it would definitely be Sceptile.
Starting as Treecko and then Grovyle, this Grass-type Pokémon secured key victories in the Hoenn League. After evolving into Sceptile, it made a legendary mark by defeating Tobias’s Darkrai at the Sinnoh League, one of the most memorable moments in the Pokémon anime.
Taking down a Legendary Pokémon proves Sceptile deserves to be among Ash’s strongest.
Sinnoh – Infernape
Few Pokémon have had as impressive a growth journey as Infernape. Originally a Chimchar rejected by Paul, Ash took it in and nurtured it into Sinnoh’s most fearsome ace.
Infernape boasts a win rate of about 77%, one of the highest among Ash’s team. Its peak moment was defeating Paul’s Electivire at the Lily of the Valley Conference, ending their long-standing rivalry.
Unova – Krookodile
Although Ash’s Unova journey is often seen as a step back, Krookodile was its brightest highlight.
Even as Krokorok, it showed consistency and grit in key battles. After evolving, Krookodile defeated Iris’s Dragonite and impressed in the Pokémon World Tournament Junior Cup and matches against Stephan.
Kalos – Greninja
Possibly the most beloved Pokémon after Pikachu, Greninja is not only powerful but also has the unique Ash-Greninja form, which appears due to the deep bond between Ash and his Pokémon.
Greninja defeated Sawyer’s Mega Sceptile despite type disadvantages and gave Diantha’s Mega Gardevoir a tough fight. Though Ash eventually returned Greninja to Kalos to protect the ecosystem, it remains one of his strongest Pokémon.
Alola – Lycanroc
Ash won his first Pokémon League thanks largely to Lycanroc. Throughout the Alola journey, Lycanroc shone in crucial battles, especially its victory over Gladion’s Lycanroc in the Manalo Conference final.
This Pokémon also helped Ash overcome strong opponents like Nanu and Olivia, becoming the true ace of his Alola team.
