While he hasn’t decided the exact story direction for Itachi, Kishimoto clearly has this idea in mind. Fans may soon get to see the legendary Uchiha return in a new one-shot.
Kishimoto’s cryptic comment about Itachi’s possible return was: “Yes, I want to create more one-shots, but I’m still thinking about it. Actually, I’m basing it on the character ranking voted by readers. Minato was first. Second was Itachi… I say it half-jokingly, but you never know.”

Beyond Itachi, Kishimoto wants to create more stories. He has expressed interest in continuing manga work, whether sequels, prequels to Naruto, or entirely new series (after the setback of Samurai 8).
Many fans hope Kishimoto will return to the Naruto universe but steer clear of Boruto, which many consider a disappointment. Naruto’s potential remains vast, especially exploring the gap between the original series’ end and Boruto’s beginning.
It seems Kishimoto plans to produce several one-shots focusing on select characters like Itachi Uchiha, Sakura Haruno, Naruto Uzumaki, and Sasuke Uchiha.
