Dragon Ball has always been famous for its increasingly powerful Saiyan transformations. However, not every Super Saiyan form has been embraced by fans. Throughout the franchise’s history, two forms have sparked endless debate due to questionable power foundations: Bardock’s Super Saiyan and Future Trunks’ Super Saiyan Rage. Interestingly, both have just appeared together in the new trailer for Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero.
To promote the first DLC pack titled Super Limiting-Breaking NEO, Bandai Namco released a trailer featuring many new characters and thrilling battles. The video quickly grabbed the Dragon Ball community’s attention by recreating classic moments and delivering unexpected reunions that few imagined would happen.
The most talked-about scene shows Future Trunks fighting alongside Bardock. This is not only a meeting of two Saiyan warriors from different eras but also a combination of two of the most controversial Super Saiyan forms in the entire Dragon Ball franchise.
Super Saiyan Bardock – a form that divided fans
Bardock, the father of Son Goku, sacrificed himself fighting Frieza before Planet Vegeta was destroyed. However, in 2012, Toei Animation released the OVA Episode of Bardock, telling a completely new story about this character.
According to the OVA, Bardock was not killed but sent back in time to long before the Saiyans settled on Planet Vegeta. There, he battles Chilled, an ancestor of Frieza, and unexpectedly awakens the Super Saiyan power.
This idea gave fans an intriguing new story for Bardock but also sparked much controversy. Many argued that Bardock achieving Super Saiyan at that time lacked solid grounding within the established storyline and power system Dragon Ball had built.
Still, Super Saiyan Bardock became one of the most beloved versions in Dragon Ball games and frequently appears in related merchandise.
Future Trunks’ Super Saiyan Rage is equally puzzling
While Bardock’s form stirred debate over its origin, Future Trunks’ Super Saiyan Rage confused viewers with its sudden power surge.
In the Dragon Ball Super anime, during the fight against fused Zamasu, Future Trunks unexpectedly unleashes a new form glowing with a mix of blue and golden aura. This form allows him to stand toe-to-toe with a foe who outmatches both Goku and Vegeta.
However, Dragon Ball Super never clearly explains what Super Saiyan Rage actually is or how Trunks attained it. Many fans believe it was simply a power boost created to serve the story’s progression.
Notably, Toyotarou, the manga author, did not include Super Saiyan Rage in the Dragon Ball Super manga. In the comics, Future Trunks only uses Super Saiyan 2 against Goku Black and Zamasu, leading many to think Toyotarou chose to exclude this controversial form.
Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero brings back unbelievable moments
Besides adding characters from the movie Dragon Ball Z: Bojack Unbound, the new Sparking! Zero DLC revives many rarely seen details from previous Dragon Ball games.
The inclusion of Super Saiyan Bardock and Future Trunks together has delighted the community. These are forms many thought would be forgotten but are now officially brought back.
Despite ongoing debates about their story logic, Super Saiyan Bardock and Super Saiyan Rage have become part of Dragon Ball’s history. Games like Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero give fans the chance to witness incredible team-ups that manga or anime could hardly achieve.
