One Piece chapter 1189 not only delivers an intense showdown between Imu and Luffy but also significantly expands the pirate world’s mythology. For the first time, Eiichiro Oda officially confirms the existence of the Sea God and reveals the legendary sword Fragarach, one of the weapons believed to have shaped the current world.
Imu summons the Sea God’s sword
In chapter 1189, Imu continues to dominate Luffy after using the Blade of Nothingness: Vohu, which nearly immobilizes the Straw Hat by draining his life force.
But Imu doesn’t stop there. He summons the Blade of the Sea God: Fragarach from the Empty Throne using his Omen ability, stabbing Luffy and pinning him to the Adam Tree before preparing to finish him off with the Xingtian axe. Luffy narrowly escapes thanks to Scopper Gaban’s timely intervention.
This marks the first time Oda directly confirms the Sea God’s existence in the main storyline.
From four gods to the Sea God’s arrival
The concept of gods in One Piece has been mentioned early on. In chapter 287, the Shandia people prayed to four gods: the Sun God, Rain God, Forest God, and Earth God.
For years, fans believed these were just Skypiea’s local beliefs. It wasn’t until chapter 1044, when Luffy awakened the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, that the Sun God title was confirmed as real. Later, chapter 1182 introduced the Rain God Zaza, portrayed as an enemy of the World Government and Celestial Dragons.
Now, chapter 1189 adds the Sea God, showing the expanding pantheon of gods in One Piece and their growing importance in the series’ final arc.
Fragarach’s devastating power
According to Saint Sommers, Fragarach is one of 19 legendary weapons once owned by the founders of the World Government after defeating Joy Boy and the Ancient Kingdom.
After their victory, these 19 founders placed their weapons before the Empty Throne as a vow of equality. However, Imu ultimately gained supreme power and control over all these treasures through the Omen ability.
While Vohu drains the target’s life force, Fragarach’s power is even more terrifying. The moment it was drawn from the Empty Throne, the withered Adam Tree branch turned to dust. When Luffy was stabbed, he faced complete disintegration if not for Gaban’s rescue.
Although Oda hasn’t revealed all of Fragarach’s abilities, chapter 1189 suggests it could be one of the most dangerous weapons ever seen in One Piece, possibly surpassing even the finest Great Treasure Swords.
Who is the Sea God really?
Another big question is the true identity of the Sea God.
Many previously thought this title belonged to Poseidon, the Mermaid Princess who fought alongside Joy Boy during the Void Century. However, chapter 1189 almost rules out this theory.
Since Fragarach is confirmed as a weapon of one of the 19 World Government founders, the Sea God is likely a different figure who opposed Joy Boy.
This aligns with the ancient text in Harley from chapter 1138, which tells that after humans killed the Sun God and tried to become gods themselves, the Sea God’s wrath led to the fall of the Second World.
The mysterious god’s identity remains a major mystery, but with Oda continually expanding the mythology in the Final Saga, fans likely won’t have to wait long to discover who truly holds the title of Sea God and their role in One Piece’s final battle.
