The first season of One-Punch Man, produced by Madhouse, set a nearly perfect standard for animation quality. The switch to JC Staff for season 2 brought not only a change in style but also sparked major controversy over animation quality and pacing.
Carrying the heavy burden of relentless criticism from season 2, director Shinpei Nagai entered season 3 ready for a tough battle. Shocking Announcement: Director Deletes Account Amid Attacks
The tension reached a breaking point, forcing Shinpei Nagai to make a sudden decision: deleting his social media account after a wave of fierce fan backlash.
In a statement now deleted from his X (Twitter) account, Nagai explained his painful reasons:
“Well, I have some unfortunate news. Some of my followers were pretending to be allies but were actually stirring up hostility, so I decided to delete my account… Their actions, like taking my words out of context, trying to provoke NDA-violating comments, or turning this into profit, are unacceptable and can’t be ignored.”
Nagai emphasized that he always gives his best for the fans with utmost sincerity, but the current social media environment has become intolerable for the project. He expressed deep disappointment:
“The ones who suffer the most are the genuine fans. I cannot forgive those who tarnish the staff’s honor or exploit creators’ struggles for profit through hate.”
Most sadly, Nagai revealed the backlash has negatively affected his mental health: “Honestly, this is impacting my mental well-being and only brings harm to the work, the staff, and the original creators.”
This incident serves as a sobering warning about how some fans have crossed the line in their criticism, pushing a dedicated director to abandon social media at what should be a pivotal moment in his career.
