One-Punch Man Season 3 Faces Backlash Over Animation Quality

Fans question if the long wait for One-Punch Man season three was worth it after disappointing animation

After a long wait, One-Punch Man season three has finally premiered, but unfortunately, fans feel their patience was not rewarded. Starting from season two, the animation quality sparked controversy when the studio changed from Madhouse to JC Staff, and it seems season three continues to struggle with similar issues.

Many viewers hoped that the extended production time would improve the animation quality for Saitama’s return. Sadly, those same fans are now pointing out moments where season three falls short compared to the outstanding animation of earlier seasons.

What fans criticized in the latest One-Punch Man episode

In episode two of season three, Garou and Saitama face off once again, with “Caped Baldy” easily defeating the Hero Hunter with a single punch. Afterwards, Garou is examined by two members of the Monster Association to see if he qualifies to join their ranks.

Although Garou’s latest battle features some valuable animation, several key moments, including the scene where the Hero Hunter slides down a hill, felt lacking to many anime fans. The newest episode shows JC Staff can depict Saitama’s world battles, but they still have a long way to go.

One-Punch Man director and animator respond

Earlier this year, season three director Shinpei Nagai explained some of the behind-the-scenes challenges involved in bringing the series back:

“During the consultation for One-Punch Man season three, I focused on integrating a new workflow, something I discussed at CGWORLD, connecting 3D and 2D processes to extend production time even by a second. I sincerely apologize for not sharing this earlier. The team is working hard on site. I can’t reveal all production details, but I am ready to answer what I can within limits.”

In a recent interview, anime animator Vincent Cansard suggested the blame should not fall solely on JC Staff:

“I think many people blame JC Staff, but the issue is a bit more complex. Sometimes the problem isn’t the animation studio, sometimes it’s the production committee controlling everything. JC Staff is just a studio trained to survive, if you know what I mean. Once again, the Japanese animation industry is facing tough times.”

JC Staff has yet to officially comment on the animation criticism from fans regarding One-Punch Man season three, though viewers remain hopeful the studio can turn things around in upcoming episodes. Judging by the animation used in the fight with Garou, the studio still has the potential to deliver some impressive moments.
