As the prince of the Saiyan race and one of the few survivors after Frieza destroyed Planet Vegeta, Vegeta has sparked many fans’ curiosity. Why has he never used the Dragon Balls to bring back his entire race?
At first glance, it seems entirely possible. By gathering all seven Dragon Balls, Vegeta could reverse one of the greatest tragedies in Dragon Ball history. Yet, this has never happened. The reasons lie not only in the limitations of the Dragon Balls but also in Vegeta’s own character.
The Dragon Balls’ rules make this wish nearly impossible
Many believe Shenron can grant any wish, but in reality, the dragon is bound by certain rules.
Back in the Frieza saga, when Goku and King Kai discussed reviving those killed by Vegeta and Nappa, Shenron confirmed that mass resurrection only applies to those who died within the past year. This is the biggest obstacle.
Planet Vegeta was destroyed by Frieza when Goku was still an infant, meaning decades ago. This means even if Vegeta wanted to use Shenron to revive all Saiyans, the wish would exceed the dragon’s power.
Many hoped Porunga, the Namekian dragon, could do what Shenron cannot.
Indeed, Porunga has advantages, such as being able to revive a person multiple times and later upgrades allowing mass resurrection, like those killed by Kid Buu. However, all Porunga resurrections in the manga and anime happened shortly after death, within hours or days.
So far, there is no evidence that Porunga can bring back those who died decades ago.
Moreover, Planet Vegeta was completely destroyed. Although the Namekian Dragon Balls restored Earth, recreating an entire planet and reviving millions who died years ago may be beyond Porunga’s limits, which depend on the power of the Grand Elder who created him.
Perhaps Vegeta never truly wanted this
Even if we ignore the Dragon Balls’ limits, there is a more convincing reason: Vegeta probably never wanted to revive the Saiyan race.
Vegeta is a character who values pride above all else. Throughout Dragon Ball, he strives to restore Saiyan honor through his own strength and effort, not through miracles.
Reviving the entire Saiyan race would force Vegeta to confront an unpleasant truth. Most Saiyans served under Frieza, willing to destroy planets for power. They often fought and killed each other. Even Vegeta’s own father never rebelled against Frieza. This is not the legacy Vegeta wants to restore.
Furthermore, Vegeta has changed greatly since living on Earth. Bulma, Trunks, and Bulla are his true family. Earth is where he grew, trained, and learned the meaning of protecting others.
Reviving Planet Vegeta and millions of Saiyan warriors would be like dragging him back to a past he has worked hard to overcome.
The near extinction of the Saiyans adds depth to Dragon Ball
From a storytelling perspective, the scarcity of surviving Saiyans is one of the elements that makes Dragon Ball unique.
This rarity places the weight of being the last heirs of a once-dominant race on Goku and Vegeta. It gives meaning to their transformations, battles, and development over decades.
If the entire Saiyan race were revived, the symbolic significance of Goku and Vegeta would diminish, and the story would lose some of its impact.
Perhaps this is why the late creator Akira Toriyama never had Vegeta consider this wish in the manga or anime. Given all Vegeta has been through, this silence seems to be the clearest answer.
