Byakugan has always been one of the most useful dōjutsu in Naruto, but Boruto is revealing a far more terrifying ability: the power to see fragments of the future.
Boruto unlocks a new Byakugan power

Traditionally, Byakugan’s power lies in observation. This dōjutsu grants the user nearly 360-degree vision, long-range sight, x-ray vision, and especially the ability to see chakra pathways and pressure points. This is the foundation of the Hyuga clan’s Gentle Fist fighting style, allowing direct attacks on an opponent’s chakra system.
Byakugan originates from the Otsutsuki clan and later became associated with the Hyuga family. However, Momoshiki Otsutsuki’s version of Byakugan possesses a unique additional ability.
After receiving Momoshiki’s Kāma seal, Boruto gradually gains access to Otsutsuki powers. Combined with the Hyuga bloodline inherited from Hinata, this transformation through Kāma ultimately turns Boruto into a complete Otsutsuki.
Notably, this change allows Boruto to tap into Momoshiki’s special ability: seeing fragments of the future, including his own fate.
Before dying, Momoshiki said he couldn’t see his own destiny but could glimpse Boruto’s future. His warning about Boruto’s blue eye taking everything from him remains one of the manga’s biggest mysteries.
Afterwards, Boruto begins accessing Momoshiki’s precognitive visions, which appear as scattered memories related to events around him.
However, the manga has not confirmed that all Byakugan users can see the future. This ability is currently linked to Momoshiki’s special Byakugan and his connection to Boruto.
Why this new power could surpass Sharingan

The key difference lies in how the two dōjutsu work. Sharingan can observe movement, analyze techniques, and help the user predict an opponent’s next move. This is a huge advantage in battle.
However, Sharingan’s predictions are based on current information to infer what will happen next. In contrast, Momoshiki’s power lets Boruto receive information about actual future events.
If Boruto can control this ability steadily, its value goes beyond combat. Knowing future events would offer a strategic edge far greater than simply predicting a punch or copying an opponent’s technique.
Still, Boruto: Two Blue Vortex hasn’t confirmed that Byakugan has surpassed Sharingan. The visions Boruto sees are still fragmented and limited, while advanced Sharingan forms have many abilities Byakugan lacks.
Dōjutsu powers keep evolving in Boruto
Byakugan’s development shows how Boruto: Two Blue Vortex is expanding the dōjutsu system in the Naruto world.
These eye techniques no longer just retain their original abilities from the classic series. Sarada’s Mangekyo Sharingan has gained new powers, and the Rinnegan’s evolution history shows dōjutsu strength can change dramatically under special conditions.
Therefore, Momoshiki’s future-seeing ability might be just the beginning of Boruto exploring his Otsutsuki powers.
If Boruto fully masters these glimpses of the future, Byakugan could become one of the most strategically powerful dōjutsu in the entire Naruto universe.
