Among the most memorable arcs in Naruto, the Chunin Exam stands out as a fan favorite. This arc not only introduced many key characters but also set the stage for major events later in the story.
Recently, Kousuke Yahagi, a former editor of the Naruto manga, shared behind-the-scenes stories about how this arc came to be. According to him, Hunter x Hunter had a real influence on the concept of the Chunin Exam.
The Hunter Exam Inspired Naruto’s Chunin Exam
Yahagi revealed that after the first arc of Naruto ended, he and Masashi Kishimoto held a meeting to discuss the manga’s next direction.
Surprisingly, at that time Kishimoto didn’t have a clear plan for the next part of the story. So the two began brainstorming new ideas together.
Yahagi was also editing Hunter x Hunter by Yoshihiro Togashi. Since the Hunter Exam arc had just finished, he suggested incorporating a similar exam into Naruto, but adapted to fit the ninja world’s system and goals.
This suggestion sparked the creation of the Chunin Exam.
The timeline also shows a clear similarity. The Hunter Exam arc was published between 1998 and 1999, while Naruto’s Chunin Exam began in 2000.
However, drawing inspiration from another work didn’t turn the arc into a copy. Kishimoto and Yahagi transformed the exam concept into a stage where many young ninjas could appear, compete, and showcase their abilities.
Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura, Neji, Gaara, Shikamaru, and many others all had moments to shine. The battles during the exam created countless memorable scenes and significantly shifted the story’s direction.
Former Editor Faced Harsh Criticism
Although the Chunin Exam arc became one of Naruto’s most successful arcs, its development wasn’t without challenges.
Yahagi revealed he faced criticism from readers. Back then, the internet wasn’t as widespread as today, but negative feedback still reached the team through Kishimoto. At one point, some readers even called Yahagi a “fool” over decisions related to the manga’s plot.
These reactions made Yahagi and Kishimoto reconsider their original plans. They realized they couldn’t continue the story as initially intended and decided to change some key details toward the arc’s end.
These adjustments likely led to Orochimaru’s appearance during the Chunin Exam and the attack on the Leaf Village, pushing the story into a darker, more serious phase.
Kishimoto’s Original Idea Was Different
Interestingly, in a previous interview, Kishimoto shared a slightly different version of how the Chunin Exam arc was formed.
According to him, editors almost pressured him to create a tournament-style arc. The goal was to introduce many characters at once instead of continuing slower-paced mission arcs.
Kishimoto wasn’t very enthusiastic about this idea. He thought building such a large-scale tournament would be a heavy workload.
If the story had followed the original plan, the winner of the Chunin Exam might not have been who fans expected. Yahagi said Shikamaru was initially intended to be the victor.
Ultimately, the changes made during development helped the Chunin Exam become one of Naruto’s most important arcs. What started as an idea when Kishimoto was unsure how to continue the story turned into a turning point that helped Naruto achieve global success.
