In One Piece, Nico Robin is currently the only known person who can read Poneglyphs. This raises a common question among fans: why doesn’t Robin teach the other Straw Hat members to read this ancient language?
There are several solid reasons, ranging from the difficulty of the language and the World Government’s pursuit to Robin’s own past and personality.
The ancient language is extremely difficult to learn
Poneglyphs are written in an ancient language no longer used in the One Piece world. It’s not only complex in grammar but also features a unique character system that demands high memorization skills and precision.
Robin is a special case, having started studying this language from a young age. After accessing materials in the Ohara library, she spent years researching and made it almost like a second language.
Meanwhile, the other Straw Hats each have their own roles on the ship. Spending years learning such a complicated ancient language like Robin did is clearly not an easy task.
The more people who can read Poneglyphs, the greater the danger
Poneglyphs hold secrets about the Void Century, so the World Government constantly tries to stop anyone who can decode them. Robin knows better than anyone how dangerous it is to possess this knowledge. From childhood, she was hunted just for being able to read the ancient script.
If many Straw Hats could read Poneglyphs, the risk of information leaking would increase. So having only Robin handle decoding might be a way to limit risks for the whole crew.
Robin doesn’t want her loved ones to suffer the same tragedy
Robin endured years of running and betrayal after the Ohara disaster. She understands the heavy price someone with the ability to decode Poneglyphs pays when targeted by the World Government. So not teaching the ancient language to those she cares about may come from a desire to protect them.
For Robin, the Straw Hats are not just crewmates but her family. She certainly doesn’t want them to carry the dangerous burden she once faced.
Not all Straw Hats are interested in learning
Another simple reason is that not everyone in the Straw Hats is interested in learning an ancient language.
Intelligent members like Nami or Chopper might be able to pick it up if they devoted time to study. But for fighters like Luffy or Zoro, sitting for hours learning an ancient script is hardly appealing.
Especially, Luffy prefers exploring the world himself and trusts Robin to decode the Poneglyph secrets. So he doesn’t feel the need to learn it himself when there’s already a specialist in the crew.
