After nearly three decades dominating the manga world, One Piece is finally unveiling the mysterious past of Roronoa Zoro. The bloody days he spent as a bounty hunter before meeting Luffy, along with the true origins of his Wado Ichimonji sword, will come to light in a brand-new novel set to release this July.
After 29 years, Zoro’s solo novel is here!

One Piece first debuted on July 22, 1997. Shortly after, in chapter 3, Roronoa Zoro appeared as Luffy’s first crewmate. However, his flashback to his past in Shimotsuki Village in chapter 5 was very brief.
Fans only learned about his promise to become the “world’s greatest swordsman” with his childhood friend Kuina, and her tragic sudden death. Although creator Eiichiro Oda added some family background in SBS volume 105 and a few details in chapter 1033, fans have long wanted a deeper story about the Straw Hat swordsman.

To satisfy this demand, on July 3, 2026, a standalone novel focused entirely on Zoro will be released. It will delve into his harsh life in the East Blue before meeting Luffy.
While the first three chapters of this novel were teased in One Piece Magazine in 2024 and 2025, the upcoming chapter is the main highlight. According to producers, it will reveal how Zoro met his comrades Johnny and Yosaku, and recreate a fierce battle between him and a dangerous criminal with a 300,000 Belly bounty.
Unveiling the secrets of the Wado Ichimonji sword
Besides Zoro’s bounty hunter life, the novel penned by author Jun Esaka will also reveal previously undisclosed details about Wado Ichimonji.
Though not the strongest sword Zoro owns, Wado Ichimonji is a priceless treasure and symbolizes his soul. It was passed down to him by his master Shimotsuki Koushirou after Kuina’s death. It wasn’t until the Wano arc that fans learned this sword was forged by the legendary craftsman Shimotsuki Kozaburo, who also forged the sword Enma.
The upcoming novel will be the perfect stage to showcase Wado Ichimonji’s power in Zoro’s younger battles, proving why he would rather die than give up this sword, even when offered more advanced weapons.
Is this story considered canon?

A crucial note for hardcore fans: this Zoro novel is not part of the main storyline. It is written by Jun Esaka, not Eiichiro Oda. Initially, the official One Piece website claimed Oda supervised the project, but this was corrected and retracted on April 30, 2024, confirming Oda had no involvement in the content production.
Oda’s rare contribution to this novel was a humorous promotional illustration released on June 23, 2026, depicting him teasing Zoro:
Oda: “Just read a little bit!”
Zoro: “Who gave you the right to butt in?”
Therefore, while this novel is a fantastic treat that fills gaps in Zoro’s past, readers should not confuse it with official events determined by Oda. Currently, among spin-off novels, only the Ace series, which Oda directly supervised, is recognized as canon within the overall One Piece timeline.
