Adapted from the manga of the same name, Chainsmoker Cat was announced early in 2026 and quickly drew interest with its initial trailers. What surprised viewers most was the surprisingly polished animation quality, far exceeding expectations for what was originally considered a niche work. However, the element sparking the most discussion is its distinctly different storyline.
Chainsmoker Cat is set in a world where cat girls exist as a normal part of society. The main character, Yankio Sato, is a cat girl addicted to smoking, to the point she spends all the little money she has just to buy cigarettes. This habit constantly leaves her broke and frequently causes trouble for her landlord, an ordinary human.
At first glance, it might seem like a quirky comedy anime. But as the story unfolds, viewers realize it delves deeply into adult issues like loneliness, life pressures, and depression. Yankio’s addiction is portrayed in an extreme way, showing her even picking up discarded cigarette butts from the street to keep smoking.
The story doesn’t just focus on Yankio. It gradually introduces other characters, each carrying their own struggles and hidden pains. This grounded approach to everyday life, rather than following the popular adventure or isekai formulas dominating the anime market, is what gives Chainsmoker Cat its unique appeal.
Some viewers even believe the series could replicate the success of Smoking Behind the Supermarket With You, an anime centered on smoking that received high praise this year for its gentle yet emotionally rich storytelling.
However, Chainsmoker Cat is also expected to spark controversy. The use of the “cat girl” character type, which has a strong appeal in the anime community, combined with numerous fan service scenes, will likely draw a large audience. Notably, the producers confirmed they will release two versions simultaneously: a censored and an uncensored cut, clearly targeting mature viewers.
