The live-action craze is sweeping the globe, from the explosive One Piece adaptation to promising projects like Naruto and One-Punch Man gearing up to launch. Yet amid this wave of “humanized” adaptations, some anime and manga legends remain famously impossible to bring to life.
Here are seven titles we likely will never see as live-action, simply because they are too wild, too massive, or too sensitive to escape the frames of hand-drawn art.
7. Berserk

Despite its decades-long history and massive fanbase, no studio has dared to tackle a live-action Berserk. While its story might seem akin to HBO’s Game of Thrones, the real challenge lies elsewhere.
Beyond the trademark bloody battles, the Apostle demons relentlessly hunting Guts present a staggering CGI challenge. Capturing the dark, brutal, and despair-filled atmosphere of the Black Swordsman without turning it into a visual effects disaster is nearly impossible with today’s technology.
6. Dandadan

With just two anime seasons, Dandadan has quickly become a global sensation thanks to its bizarre mix of spirituality and aliens. While Chainsaw Man, a series with a similar style, has a live-action stage play, Yukinobu Tatsu’s work is a different story.
The grotesque supernatural powers, frantic battle speeds, and constantly transforming monsters make bringing Okarun and Momo to the big screen an impossible mission. This kind of madness can only be fully expressed through the energetic strokes of anime.
5. Kill la Kill

The main obstacle for a live-action Kill la Kill isn’t production but cultural norms. Studio TRIGGER’s iconic series is known for characters wearing extremely revealing outfits. Translating these designs into live-action would be a huge challenge for mainstream audiences.
Additionally, TRIGGER’s signature electric graphic style and rocket-fast pacing are things real cameras can never fully capture.
4. Akira

Akira is the title on this list that has come closest to a live-action adaptation multiple times. Even the talented director Taika Waititi was once attached. Yet some kind of curse seems to haunt every attempt to bring Neo-Tokyo’s dark future to life.
After numerous canceled projects, anime fans have grown cold to the idea. A masterpiece that redefined cyberpunk like Akira is best preserved in its original form to protect its artistic value.
3. Neon Genesis Evangelion

Like Akira, Evangelion had a grand live-action plan in the mid-2000s crafted by Hollywood. The renowned WETA Workshop, known for The Lord of the Rings, even began concept art.
However, aside from Kabuki-style plays in Japan, we will likely never see a real-life Shinji Ikari. Recreating the giant Evas and the complex, abstract inner struggles of the characters in a film is too risky for any investor.
2. Made in Abyss

Honestly, no child actor could capture the chibi appearance yet tragic fate of Made in Abyss’s young stars. Plus, the bizarre creatures and vibrant yet deadly ecosystem of the Abyss pose an enormous challenge for set designers.
A live-action version would require drastic story changes from the original, something hardcore fans would never accept.
1. Gurren Lagann

Topping the list is the Mecha king, Gurren Lagann. It’s hard to imagine a live-action version of battles on a galactic scale, where robots use entire galaxies as weapons. Simon and Kamina’s story powerfully showcases the strength of animation, where imagination knows no bounds.
While One Piece has succeeded, the madness and scale of Gurren Lagann simply go beyond what the real world can handle.
