There was a time when the Skypiea Arc was seen as the “black sheep” of the series. Many fans advised skipping it, thinking it was too disconnected from the main story about the treasure and the Four Emperors.
However, as we enter the Final Saga, creator Oda has earned everyone’s respect. Skypiea is far from an exception, it’s actually the crucial foundation for One Piece’s ultimate mystery. From the concept of the Sun God to the theme of liberation, everything shines when Luffy reveals the power of Nika.
Today, let’s revisit six fascinating details proving that Luffy, the true Sun God, was destined to save Skypiea all along.
1. The Sun God existed in the Shandia’s faith

In One Piece chapter 287, as Mousse was about to be sacrificed to stop a plague, the Shandia tribe mentioned four gods: the Sun God, the Rain God, the Earth God, and the Forest God.
At that time, the Shandia worshipped the giant serpent Kashigami as the embodiment of these gods. Although Noland proved Kashigami was just an ordinary creature, the continued appearance of these gods in ancient texts at Elbaph shows the Shandia’s faith was based on real historical beings. Could their knowledge have faded and become mixed with beast worship over hundreds of years?
2. The Sun God is always seen as a god of salvation

Among the four gods, Mousse specifically reassured her mother that she would “meet the Sun God.” This shows that in the Shandia’s mind, the Sun God symbolizes peace and a beautiful eternal realm.
Ironically but meaningfully, hundreds of years later, Luffy, who carries the Devil Fruit power of the Sun God, appears to save the Shandia’s descendants. Oda seems to have planted the seed of the Nika concept very early on without us realizing it.
3. The clash between the “God of Liberation” and the “God of Tyranny”

In Skypiea, Enel calls himself God, ruling through fear and punishment. He isolates himself from humans, cold and ruthless.
In contrast, Luffy arrives as an adventurer, uninterested in divine titles, enjoying food and laughter. This contrast is profound: a false god who brings chains (Enel) versus a true god who brings freedom (Nika). Luffy’s dancing and laughter for the people embody the essence of the “Liberation Warrior” title.
4. Conis’s prayer was answered by a true God

In One Piece chapter 297, as Enel unleashed destructive attacks, Conis clasped her hands in prayer, begging a god to save the people.
At the time, we thought it was a desperate plea in a dire situation. But looking back now, that prayer was answered by Luffy himself, who possesses true divine power. The “sun” that saved Skypiea wasn’t a fanciful miracle but a real boy with the will of Nika.
5. The campfire dance

This detail gave fans chills after Gear 5 was revealed. The image of Luffy dancing joyfully by the fire with the wolves in Skypiea, his silhouette cast against the flames, closely resembles the shape of Nika we see later.
Everything from his posture to his laughter matches in an uncanny way. Even more striking, this moment happens in an arc that constantly references the Sun God. It’s hard to believe this was just a coincidence from Oda.
6. Skypiea is a “miniature model” of the final battle

The more we analyze, the more Skypiea feels like a draft for the Final Saga. First, there’s a false god ruling the world (Enel – Imu/Tenryuubito), a hidden ancient history and the Poneglyphs, oppressed peoples and ancient cities. Finally, there’s the symbol of the sun and a liberator who brings laughter.
The only difference is scale. If Skypiea had Enel, at the end of the journey, Luffy will face Imu and forces far more terrifying.
