This weekend (June 26, 2026), DC Studios’ most anticipated project, Supergirl, will premiere worldwide. Not only has it shattered pre-release commercial records, but this solo film about the heroine Kara Zor-El also carries the crucial mission of fixing the fatal mistakes that once brought down the old DCEU empire.
Record-Breaking Marketing Deal: Over 80 Major Sponsors Back the Film

Before its first screenings even began, Supergirl made history at DC Studios by setting an unprecedented marketing record for the number of strategic partners involved.
According to the latest reports, more than 80 global brands have signed on to promote the film, generating an estimated $100 million or more in free media value across platforms. This massive campaign includes prime-time advertising, displays in major retail chains, digital campaigns, and heavy global television exposure.
Among the 80 sponsors, 65 are international partners, 14 are from North America, and 4 multinational corporations with worldwide influence include Samsung, OPI, American Airlines, and Timex. The variety of brands, from food and cosmetics to automotive and tech, demonstrates the enormous commercial appeal of Milly Alcock’s portrayal of Kara Zor-El.
James Gunn’s Smart Move: Correcting DCEU’s Deadly Mistakes

Beyond box office numbers, Supergirl is a strategic move to help the new DC Universe (DCU) redefine its direction. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, executive producer Lars P. Winther openly admitted they are learning deeply from the past mistakes of the previous leadership during Zack Snyder’s DCEU era.
Looking back, the biggest error of the DCEU was rushing. They launched the universe with Superman and Batman, then immediately pushed major characters like Wonder Woman and Aquaman into Justice League. Focusing too much on big-name heroes left no room for others to shine. As a result, when major projects faltered, the entire system collapsed without supporting stories to lean on.
DC Studios is now taking the opposite approach. Alongside Superman (2025) paving the way, they are ready to back unique projects like Creature Commandos, Peacemaker, and now Supergirl.
“We don’t want to keep digging into the same old characters. For the universe to succeed, it needs more than just the most famous heroes. With Supergirl, we expand the story from Earth to an interplanetary scale, showing audiences how vast and diverse the DC universe really is,” Winther shared.
Kara Zor-El: A Gritty, Wounded Version of Supergirl
First introduced in a cameo in Superman (2025), Kara Zor-El’s story continues in a darker, more complete way in this solo film.

Based on the popular comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (2021-2022) by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, the screenplay was penned by Ana Nogueira under the close supervision of James Gunn and Peter Safran. Unlike her cousin Kal-El (Superman), who was raised with love by the Kent family on Earth, Kara witnessed the destruction of her home planet Krypton.
CEO Peter Safran revealed, “Kara has endured the worst tragedies. She’s not a perfect superhero role model, but a fiercely strong, gritty warrior full of pain.”

Her upcoming journey will take her across the galaxy alongside her dog Krypto and alien girl Ruthye Marye Knoll. Together, they will traverse devastated outer space territories to track down Krem, the ruthless villain who murdered Ruthye’s father.
