One Piece recently thrilled fans worldwide by releasing a trailer for a special spin-off project. This time, the spotlight on the main hero Luffy will temporarily shift to a familiar face stepping up as the new lead.

When Nami Steps Out of the Straw Hat Captain’s Shadow

Nami in One Piece: Heroines

Since Eiichiro Oda officially launched One Piece on July 22, 1997, Luffy has always been the soul and focal point of every adventure. However, on June 23, 2026, Toei Animation released the trailer for the anime spin-off titled One Piece: Heroines. This project marks a historic milestone by featuring Nami as the main character in its first episode.

In fact, since the Arlong Park arc in the original series, Nami has proven to be a character with depth and charm equal to any other. Yet, she has often been misunderstood by some fans as being selfish, materialistic, and money-driven.

One Piece: Heroines aims to completely change that perception. This special episode will delve into Nami’s inner world, her determination, and her gentle yet resilient nature, helping audiences truly understand her.

A Fresh Storyline and a Special Appearance by Nico Robin

Nico Robin appears in One Piece: Heroines

Unlike Eiichiro Oda’s main storyline filled with life-or-death battles, One Piece: Heroines is adapted from the popular novel of the same name by Jun Esaka and Sayaka Suwa, published in 2021.

The first episode centers on a seemingly simple yet dramatic everyday story. Nami longs for a special pair of shoes. This simple desire unfolds into a deep friendship between the navigator and a shoemaker named Miucha, while also drawing her into a direct conflict with the renowned designer Lebno Listchaque.

Alongside thrilling action scenes featuring her Climatact weather staff, the trailer excites fans by revealing Nico Robin’s appearance. These new spin-off scenes, not found in the original novel, aim to deepen the sisterly bond between the two women aboard the Thousand Sunny.

A New Artistic Vision from Visual Wizard Takashi Kojima

Director Haruka Kamatani and animator Takashi Kojima

What sets One Piece: Heroines apart from the weekly anime series is its artistic style. The film is crafted under the direction of the talented Haruka Kamatani and animation director and character designer Takashi Kojima, a name well-known for his highly artistic work at Toei.

Not only visually stunning with soft, flowing lines, the film’s audio is also carefully produced. The theme song “Blue Shining Star,” performed by popular singer Aina The End, is expected to climb music charts soon.

Official Air Date and Toei Animation’s Long-Term Strategy

According to official announcements, episode 1 of One Piece: Heroines focusing on Nami will premiere on July 5, 2026. Notably, it will air during the regular One Piece anime time slot, right after episode 1186 of the main story (the Elbaf battle) concludes on June 28, 2026.

While some fans feel disappointed that Heroines is a special episode rather than a full series, experts see this as a strategic move by Toei Animation and Fuji TV. Releasing Heroines acts as a high-quality “painkiller” to fill the gap during the main story’s extended breaks at Elbaf.

Moreover, this project will certainly not stop with Nami. The original One Piece: Heroines novel features many captivating stories about other heroines such as Princess Nefertari Vivi, Pirate Queen Boa Hancock, and Reiju Vinsmoke.

Robin’s appearance in Nami’s episode is seen as the perfect stepping stone for Toei to greenlight future episodes.
