The haunting story of artist Suzunone Rena serves as a stark warning to anyone sacrificing their health to chase passion or cope with extreme work pressure in the creative industry.

Suzunone Rena is a familiar name among Japanese illustrators. She has worked on illustrations for many manga and light novel projects and even ventured into Vtubing. However, few know the terrifying past behind her polished works, caused by a lifestyle of relentless overwork.

The tragedy of cutting sleep short

Since 2014, Suzunone Rena kept an intense work schedule. To meet deadlines for professional magazines while producing independent publications, she drastically reduced her sleep for years.

The consequences came sooner and harsher than she expected. Her health rapidly declined. She suffered severe back pain, chronic sleep disorders, and ultimately became unable to get out of bed on her own.

In a shocking confession, the artist revealed she had to use a cane to walk and relied on her mother’s help for basic daily tasks like bathing and using the restroom.

“Losing a few years of life is worth it”, a dangerous mindset

Rena admitted she once held a deeply flawed belief: it was better to live a shorter life but leave behind many lasting works. It wasn’t until her body broke down and she faced the risk of permanent disability that she realized health is the true foundation of creativity.

After a difficult period of treatment and rehabilitation, Suzunone Rena completely changed her lifestyle. Now, she prioritizes getting 6 to 7 hours of sleep each night, practices stretching exercises, and takes regular rest. She emphasizes, “Only with a healthy body can the mind truly flourish.”

A lesson for all night owls pushing too hard

Looking back at Rena’s old social media posts, fans noticed warning signs appeared years ago through her complaints of exhaustion. This reflects a common issue among many artists and gamers today who ignore their bodies’ cries for help until it’s too late.
