In the latest Toriyama Archives feature (January 6, 2026), dedicated to uncovering and showcasing rare drafts from Dragon Ball’s creator, a true treasure has emerged. It is the radiant image of Goku on the cover of Weekly Shonen Jump issues 3 and 4 from 1991. This special double issue, extremely rare, was designed to celebrate both Christmas and a historic milestone: distributing over 6 million copies worldwide.

Although this cover featured many iconic characters like Joseph Joestar and Jotaro Kujo from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star, and Hanamichi Sakuragi from Slam Dunk, Goku held the central position. This image affirmed Dragon Ball’s undisputed reign at the peak of the Namek saga.

Notably, fans had waited three long months to see Goku’s return. After his battle with Ginyu, the Saiyan was severely injured and confined to a recovery tank, missing the entire fight against Frieza’s first three transformations.

Goku’s appearance on the double issue’s cover was the ultimate Christmas gift for fans at the time. It marked the comeback of the series’ strongest character, ready to face Frieza’s final form.

An interesting detail is Goku’s bright smile on the cover. It might have been the last time readers saw him genuinely smile during this saga. What followed were brutal battles pushing him to the edge of life and death.

This special issue contained two highly dramatic chapters, 305 and 306. While Vegeta was barely alive and deluded into thinking he had become a Super Saiyan, Frieza cruelly crushed that hope in an instant. Goku only appeared in the final pages of chapter 306, fully recovered and sensing Vegeta’s faint breath.

Japanese fans in 1990 welcomed the new year on edge with a cliffhanger: Vegeta near death, Frieza terrifyingly powerful, and Goku freshly empowered like never before. Few could have guessed the solo fight between Goku and Frieza would drag on for six more months, concluding on June 4, 1991.

Looking back after 36 years, it’s strange to see such a happy Goku on the cover just before a battle that would claim Krillin’s life and destroy planet Namek. Perhaps Akira Toriyama intentionally drew Goku so radiant as a comfort to readers, knowing full well the tragic and intense trials his creation would endure to achieve the legendary Super Saiyan form.
