The world of Jujutsu Kaisen is entering a harsh new era in JJK Modulo. This sequel, set 68 years after the decisive battle in Shinjuku, mercilessly wipes out nearly all the main characters fans have grown attached to.
From the start, fans were shocked when two pillars of the victory against Sukuna, Yuta Okkotsu and Maki Zenin, were confirmed dead. Both were considered the strongest sorcerers of their generation, and according to fan speculation (indirectly confirmed by Modulo), they married, had children, and lived fulfilling lives before passing away.
The loss of Yuta and Maki is not just a blow to the story’s power balance but marks the end of an era. It shows that no matter how strong sorcerers are, they cannot escape the cycle of life and death, or worse, the cost of victory.
Megumi Fushiguro and Hana Kurusu Likely Dead
Although Gege Akutami rarely openly confirms romantic relationships, he skillfully pairs characters. If Yuta and Maki’s relationship is proof, then Megumi Fushiguro and Hana Kurusu are no exception. Despite no detailed information about them since the original JJK, chapter 13 of JJK Modulo almost seals their fate.
In a conversation with Yuji, Nobara Kugisaki, the only surviving first-year student, revealed that the last time she saw Yuji was at Hana Kurusu’s funeral.
Nobara’s use of Hana’s first and last name without a formal tone hints at a close bond over the years. This is especially meaningful since Hana is a new character, and this closeness likely stems from Megumi, who brought the group together.
Moreover, Nobara referring to her as “Hana Kurusu” instead of “Hana Fushiguro” (if they were married) has led many fans to speculate that Gege Akutami is subtly hiding a double tragedy. The popular theory is that Hana has died, and this heartbreaking event is the main reason for Yuji’s emotional collapse.
However, Hana Kurusu’s death strongly suggests Megumi’s fate as well. It’s hard to imagine Gege killing off such an important supporting character without addressing her partner, Megumi Fushiguro. His absence at the funeral of his closest loved one, held by friends, seems illogical unless he is also dead.
The Unique Tragedy of Yuji Itadori
The saddest fate belongs to the main character Yuji Itadori. Thanks to his ability to not age, Yuji is forced to live on after losing nearly all his friends.
Nobara reveals that Yuji has isolated himself and said he will “not attend any more funerals.” This is a direct result of witnessing Yuta, Maki, and possibly Megumi pass away one after another. Yuji’s final words to Megumi in the original series about his fear of loneliness have now become a bitter reality.
With the arrival of Dabura, introduced as the strongest new sorcerer, fans are betting on a tragic ending. Dabura might be the one who can release Yuji from his curse of immortality. If that happens, Yuji could finally have a peaceful ending, fulfilling his grandfather’s last wish: to die surrounded by loved ones. It would be a sorrowful but necessary moment to close the story of the boy who once carried Sukuna’s curse on his shoulders.
