Last summer, Takeshi Konomi confirmed that The Prince of Tennis II would be coming to an end. Since then, he has been steadily completing the final chapters following the monthly release schedule in Jump SQ magazine.
This summer, Konomi confirmed he was working on the last chapter. As planned, the finale appeared in this month’s issue in Japan, officially closing the sequel series that has lasted 17 years.
Due to overwhelming fan demand, the September issue of Jump SQ, which features the final chapter, had to be reprinted for the first time in 19 years.
Many readers wanted to own this special issue, not only for the final chapter but also for the commemorative gifts and content included. This highlights the enduring popularity of one of the greatest sports manga legends.
A 27-Year Journey of a Legend
The conclusion of The Prince of Tennis II after 17 years also marks 27 years since the original series debuted.
The Prince of Tennis first ran in Weekly Shonen Jump starting in 1999 and continued for nearly a decade before ending. One year later, in 2009, Takeshi Konomi launched the sequel, The Prince of Tennis II, continuing the story of familiar characters until this year.
