In the world of Pokémon anime, fans often debate fiercely over which of Ash Ketchum’s Pokémon is the strongest trump card. However, Ash is not the only trainer with a powerhouse on his team. The most powerful lead Pokémon usually belong to champions or even Legendary and Mythical Pokémon who choose to fight alongside worthy trainers.
Here are 8 lead Pokémon with game-breaking strength, capable of sweeping entire opposing teams and only truly challenged when facing each other.
8. Darkrai (Trainer: Tobias)
When Ash reached the Sinnoh League semifinals, he was close to the level of the Elite Four. Unfortunately for Ash, that tournament featured a “destroyer” named Tobias. With only the Mythical Pokémon Darkrai, Tobias effortlessly swept through all challengers without breaking a sweat.
Ash and his Pokémon had to give their all to finally defeat this Darkrai. Ash’s Hoenn ace, Sceptile, could only finish it off after Heracross, Gible, and Torkoal had worn down Darkrai’s stamina.
Despite Darkrai’s sleep-inducing and draining moves, Tobias eventually tasted defeat when he failed to overthrow champion Cynthia at the Lily of the Valley tournament.
7. Dragonite (Trainer: Lance)
Champion Lance is renowned in the Pokémon world as the champion of both Kanto and Johto, and one of the Masters Eight contenders. Since the early days of the franchise, Dragonite, the final evolution of the original Dragon-type, has been his signature symbol.
Although Lance appears sparingly due to limited anime screen time, his achievements speak volumes. It’s hard to imagine his success without Dragonite. However, this dragon has had some embarrassing moments, such as losing to Diantha in the first round of the Masters Eight, and its performance was even considered weaker than Ash’s Dragonite.
6. Metagross (Trainer: Steven)
It wasn’t until Pokémon Journeys that fans saw champion Steven and his Metagross compete in the Masters Eight. Although eliminated in the first round, they played a key role in showcasing Ash’s strength.
With Mega Evolution, Shiny Metagross, a Steel/Psychic pseudo-legend, helped Steven reach the rank of the third strongest trainer worldwide. Without Ash and Pikachu’s exclusive Z-Move, overcoming this mechanical fortress would have been impossible.
5. Gardevoir (Trainer: Diantha)
Gardevoir is one of the most beloved Pokémon of all time. Under Kalos champion Diantha, it became a formidable force. In the XY series, when facing Ash’s Ultimate Greninja, Diantha showed she could easily counter it without full effort.
Thanks to Mega Gardevoir, Diantha finished in the Top 4 strongest trainers at the Masters Eight after defeating Lance’s Dynamax Dragonite. Still, her Gardevoir was powerless against the overwhelmingly skilled Leon.
4. Garchomp (Trainer: Cynthia)
Cynthia’s Garchomp is a nightmare straight out of the Generation IV games, perfectly captured in the anime. From Diamond and Pearl through Journeys, this Dragon/Ground pseudo-legend has been portrayed as an unshakable fortress, intimidating even top trainers like Tobias.
Cynthia and Mega Garchomp easily crushed champion Iris in the Masters Eight’s first round. Their only loss to Ash was due to Cynthia’s tactical error of choosing Gigantamax Togekiss over trusting Garchomp. Without that surprise move, Ash’s Mega Lucario would have struggled to defeat this “monster.”
3. Charizard (Trainer: Leon)
Leon is famous for his undefeated streak worldwide, with Charizard as the heart of his monster lineup. While other Pokémon like Rillaboom have suffered defeats, Charizard remained unbeaten before facing Ash.
Gigantamax Charizard turns Leon into an immortal “god,” boasting strength and durability far beyond the Mega Evolutions of Cynthia, Diantha, or Steven. Even though two other trainers, including Alain, also use Charizard, none compare to the world champion’s fiery lizard. Though Ash’s Pikachu eventually defeated it, Leon’s Charizard remains an unprecedented legend.
2. Pikachu (Trainer: Ash Ketchum)
Over more than two decades, viewers have witnessed Pikachu’s journey from a struggling electric mouse in early gyms to defeating Legendary Pokémon and world champions. Their pure and sacred friendship has propelled this duo to the pinnacle of glory.
Pikachu’s list of defeated foes includes some of the toughest: Drake’s Dragonite, Brandon’s Regice, Tobias’s Latios, Alain’s Metagross, guardian Tapu Koko, Steven’s Mega Metagross, and Leon’s Gigantamax Charizard. With lightning speed, resilience, and especially the signature “10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt,” Pikachu has firmly established Ash as the world’s number one trainer.
1. Rayquaza (Trainer: Lucius)
The new Pokémon Horizons series expands the story with the legend of Lucius, Liko’s ancestor. Known as the strongest trainer in history, Lucius commands a dream team, but it is the appearance of his ace, Shiny Rayquaza, that proves neither Ash nor Leon have reached his level.
Although Ash has defeated many Legendary and Mythical Pokémon, the anime clearly draws a line, preventing him from facing supreme legends (those featured on game covers) as they are considered nature’s guardian gods. In the story, Rayquaza’s power ranks just below the creator Arceus, the creation trio, and Ultra Necrozma. Lucius taming and making Shiny Rayquaza his lead Pokémon places him in an unrivaled position no one else in history has surpassed.
