10 One Piece Anime Moments That Outshine the Manga

From Going Merry's funeral to Luffy's punch at a Celestial Dragon, these anime scenes elevate the original story.

One Piece manga fans often have mixed feelings about the anime adaptation. Since the anime and manga are produced almost simultaneously, the anime tends to stretch scenes, resulting in a slower pace. However, the anime has its own strengths like soundtrack, voice acting, and animation that deliver the story’s emotions and grandeur in a more impressive way.

While Oda’s manga is amazing, there are moments in the One Piece anime that surpass the original manga. Here are 10 of those moments.

10. Kuma’s Flashback

Kuma’s flashback in the anime includes added scenes like his final moments with his mother and extra action sequences. Though sometimes criticized for being drawn out, these details deepen Kuma’s story, allowing viewers to better understand his tragic life.

9. Journey to Arlong Park

Straw Hats heading to Arlong Park

The Straw Hats’ march to Arlong Park is a classic moment. In the manga, Nami’s breakdown, Luffy placing his straw hat on her head, and the crew silently moving forward is powerful. But the anime’s combination of voice acting and music elevates this scene, making it one of the most memorable in the series.

8. Going Merry’s Funeral

Going Merry's funeral scene

Going Merry was the Straw Hats’ first ship and felt like a beloved crew member. Losing her was like losing a dear friend, and the anime fully captures the emotional weight of the funeral. This moment deserved the extended treatment so viewers could truly mourn their companion’s passing.

The gentle atmosphere, somber music, and muted colors transform an already heartbreaking manga scene into a truly shattering anime sequence. The voice acting conveys the deep sorrow of the farewell in a way manga alone can’t.

7. Luffy vs. Sanji in the Whole Cake Island Arc

The fight between Luffy and Sanji in the manga lacked emotional impact. The anime made it far more memorable. Mayumi Tanaka’s outstanding voice work as Luffy expresses his pain, letting viewers feel the despair and significance behind Sanji’s decision.

6. Luffy’s Gear 5

Luffy Gear 5 animation

Luffy’s Gear 5, designed by Oda with lots of personality, perfectly recreates classic 1940s cartoon effects. This power was made especially for the anime. While Oda’s manga illusions of movement are impressive, seeing them animated is a whole different experience.

Scenes like Luffy turning the floor into rubber, his eyes bulging, and stretching a floorboard to deflect Kaido’s fire attack look way cooler in the anime than on the manga page.

5. G-8 Arc

One Piece G-8 Navy arc

The G-8 arc is one of the most respected filler arcs in any anime series. Even die-hard manga fans grudgingly acknowledge it because it continues the story while naturally developing characters and setting up the next arc.

It’s also one of the rare times Luffy and the Straw Hats can’t solve problems with fists. They must use their wits to escape the Navy and protect their ship. G-8 is a thrilling cat-and-mouse story that humanizes the Navy, who were mostly portrayed as villains at that point.

4. One Piece Episode 1015

Episode 1015 adapts the incredible manga chapter 1000, including Luffy’s most powerful punch against Kaido in the Wano arc. To celebrate this milestone, the anime team poured their heart into creating an episode unlike any other.

From thunder effects to animation, the episode excels, with Luffy’s iconic declaration to become Pirate King sending chills through fans. Episode 1015 reinvigorated viewers and set the stage for Luffy’s rematch with Kaido, proving the One Piece anime is a perfect visual upgrade to the manga.

3. Luffy’s Final Punch to Crocodile

Luffy punches Crocodile

Crocodile was the first major villain to truly push Luffy and the Straw Hats to their limits. He remains one of the most beloved antagonists and one of the few who defeated Luffy multiple times. When Luffy finally lands a series of punches that send Crocodile crashing through the floor of the underground ruins, Antonín Dvořák’s “Symphony No. 9,” also known as the “New World Symphony,” plays.

At first, classical music in One Piece might feel out of place, but this piece adds grandeur and artistry to the moment, something the manga can’t convey. Though some might see it as unnecessary, this scene fully honors Luffy’s effort to overcome Crocodile. The music adds sophistication, with “New World Symphony” carrying multiple meanings. It’s an iconic anime moment well worth watching.

2. Luffy Punches a Celestial Dragon

Luffy punching a Celestial Dragon is satisfying in both manga and anime. However, the anime elevates the moment with a simple but powerful choice: the screen turns black and white the instant Luffy’s fist hits Charlos’s face. The lack of color adds weight to the punch, showing Luffy’s intense fury.

1. Zoro’s Backstory

Zoro's backstory in One Piece anime

Early on, the One Piece anime had more freedom with the source material. At that time, the franchise wasn’t yet a global powerhouse, and no one knew how long the manga would last. One example is rearranging the order of events in Luffy and Zoro’s story, bringing Zoro’s backstory before the Baratie arc. While Zoro’s story is just a few manga pages, the anime expanded it into a full episode.

Unlike modern One Piece anime that might fill an episode with unnecessary details, the creators chose to expand aspects of Zoro’s life in ways that benefit the story. We see more of Zoro’s childhood village and better understand Kuina, his childhood friend. Spending more time on Zoro’s past draws viewers deeper into the story and makes the final tragedy much more heartbreaking. This moment is not only a highlight of early One Piece but of the entire series.
