Behind the Scenes of The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber 2000: The Iconic Role Swap

For many generations of viewers, The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber 2000 is more than just a series, it’s a treasure trove of memories from TVB’s golden era of wuxia dramas. Yet behind those flawless scenes lie fascinating backstage stories few know about, from a historic role swap to controversies over the male lead’s age.

The fateful role swap: When Ngô Khải Hoa’s casting insight changed everything

Initially, the production planned to cast Gigi Lai as Zhou Zhiruo and Charmaine Sheh as Zhao Min. However, after studying the script, lead actor Ngô Khải Hoa boldly suggested the director swap their roles.

Ngô Khải Hoa gave two compelling reasons. First, Gigi Lai’s sharp features and slightly exotic look perfectly suited the image of a noble and clever Mongolian princess. Second, Charmaine Sheh was a newcomer then, with a round, innocent face that radiated the warmth of a gentle girl from the banks of the Han River.

This suggestion proved to be a masterstroke. The role of Zhao Min made Gigi Lai a star with her radiant, alluring presence and sparkling eyes. Meanwhile, Charmaine Sheh, though new, stunned audiences with her transformation from an innocent “white rabbit” to a fierce and cold sect leader.

The oldest Zhang Wuji in history and Jin Yong’s six-word endorsement

Unlike the support for the two female leads, Ngô Khải Hoa faced the most pressure. At filming, he was 36 or 37 years old, considered too old to portray the youthful Zhang Wuji from the original novel. Critics doubted him and even mocked him as an “uncle” playing a young hero.

Amid the criticism, author Jin Yong personally defended the actor with six powerful words: “Acting can make up for it.” This endorsement was priceless encouragement, and Ngô Khải Hoa did not disappoint. When the series aired, his deep and composed performance erased all doubts about his age.

Zhang Wuji's character adaptation

The most distinctive feature of the 2000 version is how Zhang Wuji’s character was adapted. In the original, the Ming Cult leader is often disliked for being indecisive, kind to all women but not truly loyal to any.

However, Ngô Khải Hoa’s Zhang Wuji shows a completely different side: deeply devoted and consistent. The series clearly shows his passion for Zhao Min from the very first glance. For other women, he maintains clear boundaries: respect for Zhou Zhiruo, pity for Xiao Zhao, and sympathy for Zhou Zhi. His love for the princess Zhao Min is open and heartfelt, creating a memorable romance unmatched by other adaptations.

No matter how many remakes come with flashy effects and young, handsome casts, The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber 2000 holds a unique place. Fans remember it for Gigi Lai’s stunning beauty, Charmaine Sheh’s transformation, and above all, a Zhang Wuji who may be older in age but remains youthful in love.
