Dragon Ball Z Gets Stunning Remaster After 36 Years

Despite its legendary status, official Dragon Ball Z releases have long suffered from poor image quality.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Goku and the Z Fighters took over TV screens, capturing the hearts of millions of young fans. Today, Dragon Ball stands as one of the highest-grossing franchises of all time.

There’s no denying that Dragon Ball Z played a huge role in bringing anime to a global audience. However, after decades, the series’ image and sound quality have seriously deteriorated. Fortunately, a passionate fan remake is now allowing fans to relive Goku’s journey in the best possible way.

Fans can finally enjoy Dragon Ball Z in its best form

Despite its legendary reputation, the original Dragon Ball Z broadcast was poorly preserved. Recent home releases on Blu-ray and DVD have often been criticized for failing to meet standards. Many longtime fans refuse to watch newer entries like Dragon Ball Super or Dragon Ball GT, feeling the modern visuals lack the charm of the original. Ironically, most fans have never actually seen Dragon Ball Z in its original broadcast quality.

Since its 1989 debut in Japan, the series has suffered from numerous issues: inconsistent cropping to fit HD screens, color desaturation, and even strange greenish tints throughout many episodes.

Luckily, a dedicated fan group called Seed of Might has passionately undertaken a preservation project. They created a color-corrected and sound-restored version of Dragon Ball Z. Previously, the group successfully restored the original Dragon Ball series and several franchise movies.

For the first time in decades, fans can experience the vibrant colors and clear dialogue without muffled audio. The iconic Funimation English dubs have been cleaned up, accompanied by both the original Japanese and American soundtracks. Seeing this restoration firsthand reveals just how much time has worn down the original work, especially since even official releases from Toei contain many flaws.

Poor preservation of Dragon Ball

Dragon Ball is one of the biggest anime and manga franchises in history, yet its management has disappointed fans. When streaming platforms and Blu-ray releases are so poor that fans have to restore the series themselves, it highlights a serious problem.

The issues extend beyond anime. Even the official English manga from Viz Media contains mistranslations of character names, sparking debates over names like Vegito versus Vegetto. Former editor Kazuhiko Torishima, who worked closely with the late creator Akira Toriyama, recently criticized the quality of commercial products tied to the franchise. He warned that management is willing to sacrifice quality because they know fans will buy whatever is released.

This neglect has led to poor preservation of classic series like Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. While fan love for the franchise remains strong, official efforts to deliver a truly authentic viewing experience have been far too limited.
