In the latest chapter of Seven Deadly Sins: Four Knights of the Apocalypse, series creator Nakaba Suzuki revealed that Gaiwan’s sexual orientation is caused by a “curse.”
Merlin, the legendary witch from the King Arthur lore and Gaiwan’s mother, apparently placed a curse on her as a child so that she “would only be attracted to women,” and now she has lifted that curse.
Merlin gave a chilling explanation for her actions: “You only liked women because of a curse I placed on you when you were young. I did it out of love, you know. I didn’t want you to suffer like I did, to fall into the pit of pain caused by impossible love. So I thought it best to erase any romantic interest in the opposite sex.”
Needless to say, the fan backlash to this reveal has been intense, with many expressing anger on social media.
Consequences and an Uncertain Future
For those unfamiliar, Gaiwan is the daughter of Merlin and Escanor, one of the original powerful characters in The Seven Deadly Sins. Thanks to her parents, she has inherited impressive abilities.
However, Merlin’s interference in her daughter’s identity and sexuality through a “curse” has damaged the character’s image among readers. Many believe Gaiwan’s relationship with her mother will be strained after this shocking revelation.
This controversial moment is unlikely to be animated anytime soon. After the second season of Four Knights of the Apocalypse, which is exclusive to Netflix, a third season has not yet been confirmed. Even if season three is in production, it will take considerable time to reach the events of chapter 216.
Although the main series has ended, Nakaba Suzuki has not hinted that the sequel will follow suit, meaning the manga could feature more controversial developments involving Gaiwan in the future. For now, this moment remains one of the most divisive in the sequel, and fans’ strong reactions are understandable.
