More than 30 years since its debut in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shōnen Sunday, Detective Conan and its iconic characters continue to captivate fans across generations.
Among them is Uncle Mori Kogoro, known by nicknames like the clueless detective, the sleeping detective, and the mustachioed detective. Creator Gosho Aoyama intentionally portrays him as having very low emotional intelligence (EQ), yet he is far from disliked, in fact, he draws a large fanbase. Why is that?
Insensitive and Lacking Subtlety
One of the clearest signs of Mori’s low EQ is his insensitivity and poor communication skills.
The mustachioed uncle often fails to notice others’ emotions, expressions, or hidden meanings in conversations. Because of this, he struggles to understand, empathize, or properly care for those around him. For example, Mori frequently gives inappropriate or even ridiculous compliments that embarrass or anger others. He often argues with his wife, Eri Kisaki, and clashes with his daughter, Ran, without realizing how his small mistakes hurt them.
Because of his insensitivity and lack of subtlety, Mori often misses others’ feelings and overlooks their efforts, causing conversations to hit dead ends.
Poor Emotional Control and Overconfidence
Another obvious sign of Mori’s low EQ is his quick temper. He easily loses control over his emotions when things don’t go his way. Especially when questioned or provoked, Mori tends to yell, slam tables, or even resort to physical actions to vent his frustration.
On top of that, his competitive nature and desire for recognition make him boast about his detective skills, even though most of his successes are thanks to Conan. This arrogance and lack of self-awareness make viewers both laugh and shake their heads at him.
However, when it comes to proving his abilities or showing care for his loved ones, Mori often goes silent. Instead of offering comforting words, he tends to avoid conversations or watch TV. Even when genuinely moved, he struggles to express his feelings clearly, leading others to see him as cold-hearted.
This is a classic trait of someone with low EQ: they have emotions but don’t know how to show them, making their feelings almost invisible.
Low EQ but Still a Fan Favorite
It’s no exaggeration to say Mori Kogoro has the lowest EQ in Detective Conan, yet after decades, he remains a beloved character with a strong fan following. There are good reasons for this.
Mori’s low EQ is deliberately contrasted with Conan (Shinichi), highlighting Conan’s emotional finesse. Mori’s awkwardness creates humorous situations where he is overshadowed by the young detective.
Also, if you look beyond the surface, Mori’s clumsiness, quick temper, and overconfidence add humor that balances the tension of the cases. His carefree, naive emotions bring laughter and lighten the story.
Most importantly, Mori is not a bad or uncaring person. He is a loving father and a husband who still cares deeply for his family but just doesn’t know how to express it. He has moments that reveal his affection for Ran and concern for his family, though often in awkward ways.
This makes him feel more real. Nobody is perfect, and Mori represents middle-aged men who may be stubborn and insensitive but still have warm hearts.
