In a special interview celebrating Dragon Ball’s 30th anniversary (shared by Kazenshuu), creator Akira Toriyama revealed the real reason Frieza stands apart from the rest.
Toriyama’s haunting break from his usual style
Toriyama once admitted an interesting fact about his creative approach: “When I draw villains, I usually avoid making them overly cunning or despicable to the point that it makes readers uncomfortable. Not because I worry about the audience, but simply because I personally hate drawing things like that.”
However, Frieza is a rare exception. He added, “Frieza is quite scheming, but generally I don’t draw things so unpleasant that they negatively affect the viewer’s mindset.” This break from his usual rule made Frieza a brutal, ruthless villain who truly terrifies both characters and fans alike.
What makes Frieza more terrifying than anyone else?
Frieza’s signature isn’t just his raw power or cold voice, but the sheer scale of his cruelty. He treats wiping out entire planets and mass slaughter as just part of his business.
Toriyama revealed that Frieza was inspired by real-life ruthless real estate speculators who profit by exploiting others. Because of this, Frieza is not only Goku’s personal enemy but also a symbol of a system built on fear, greed, and absolute domination.
His calm, polite facade combined with bone-chilling cruelty is his strongest weapon. Frieza doesn’t need to scream or lose control to assert his authority. His quiet confidence and complete lack of compassion make him an unforgettable villain icon.
Defining “Pure Evil” after four decades
Early Dragon Ball villains usually had clear goals: King Piccolo or early Vegeta sought world domination or power for recognition. They were dangerous because they were still climbing to the top, meaning they could be stopped before achieving their dreams.
Frieza is different. From his first appearance, he was already the Emperor of Universe 7. He didn’t need to conquer planets to prove himself because he ruled thousands of worlds with a vast army. Shockingly, despite his youth, Frieza built a bloody empire through violence and fear.
Even at the peak of power, Frieza craves immortality. His hunger for power never ends. After 40 years, Frieza remains the ultimate definition of “Pure Evil” in Dragon Ball: an entity representing absolute power, without mercy or reason.
