Goku is always the strongest character and the central figure holding everything together in Dragon Ball. However, beneath his innocent and pure nature, this iconic hero frequently makes unnecessary irresponsible decisions that put himself and others in danger, sometimes causing more harm than the villains.
Not only is Goku the core that connects everything in Dragon Ball, but he’s also the best-equipped hero to face the latest threats. Yet his innocence and purity, while charming traits, lead to a series of foolish, reckless, and irresponsible choices throughout the story, bringing unpredictable consequences to the Dragon Ball universe.
1. Goku Saves Enemies Using Senzu Beans
Senzu Beans are one of Dragon Ball’s greatest miracles. However, Goku always feels obligated to give Senzu Beans to even his strongest enemies, driven by his sense of fair play. His selflessness and honor are admirable qualities, but at times, these actions become foolish and irresponsible, costing others their lives.
Piccolo, Cell, and even Moro are some of the worst examples of villains Goku has healed with Senzu Beans.
2. Goku Puts Gohan in a Life-or-Death Battle Against Cell
During the Cell Saga, Goku knew he wasn’t strong enough to defeat Perfect Cell. Instead of seeking a cooperative strategy, he shocked everyone by making Gohan the next fighter. Though Goku had absolute faith in his son’s hidden power, it was still an extremely harsh challenge.
This plan forced Gohan to endure immense pressure to reach Super Saiyan 2 on the spot. Although Gohan ultimately won, Goku’s flawed plan came at a high cost: Cell killed Future Trunks and Goku himself. Rather than risking Gohan’s life, working together would have been a much safer and more mature decision.
3. Goku Bets His Own Life (Dragon Ball Super)
In Dragon Ball Super, seeking new power, Goku hired the legendary assassin Hit to kill him. His innocence and thirst for battle led him to see this as a training method.
Goku didn’t tell his friends or family about this risky plan, causing extreme worry. Although he eventually restarted his own heart and survived, there was no guarantee it would work. This act was irresponsible toward his loved ones, done solely to satisfy his personal hunger for strength.
4. Goku Pushes Kaio-Ken Beyond Its Limits
The Kaio-Ken technique is powerful but comes with a strict warning from King Kai about the strain it puts on the body. Still, Goku couldn’t resist pushing Kaio-Ken beyond its limits repeatedly when fighting Frieza and Vegeta.
Pushing himself beyond his limits again showed Goku’s determination to save the world, but he was incredibly lucky to escape unharmed each time. Kaio-Ken reappeared unexpectedly in Dragon Ball Super combined with Super Saiyan Blue, where Goku finally faced the consequences of pushing King Kai’s technique too far: Kaio-Ken Blue caused him to suffer Delayed Onset Ki Disorder, forcing him to confront his recklessness.
5. Goku Destroys the Potara Earrings Just to Fight Buu Alone
In the Buu Saga, after Fusion failed, Goku and Vegeta finally agreed to fuse using the Potara earrings. Shockingly, Goku then destroyed the Potara earrings so he could fight Kid Buu alone.
Fighting Kid Buu without fusing with Vegeta was an irresponsible decision, especially since Goku criticized Vegeta for doing the same just a few episodes earlier. Goku loves a challenge, but his pride in the Kid Buu fight wasn’t worth the risk. Having witnessed Earth’s destruction by Buu, he shouldn’t have risked anything unnecessary just to satisfy his urge to fight.
6. Frieza and Cell Trick Goku into Hell
In the Super 17 Saga (Dragon Ball GT), Goku was careless entering Hell and was trapped by Frieza and Cell working together. He was banished to the deepest part of Hell.
Goku’s overly casual attitude toward danger downplayed the severity of the situation. Sadly, this forced Piccolo to sacrifice himself and stay in Hell so Goku could return.
7. Goku Is Too Casual Befriending Zeno
Zeno (Omni-King) can erase entire universes in an instant. Yet Goku is extremely casual and friendly with Zeno, treating him no differently than any other friend.
This behavior horrifies gods like Beerus and Shin because it puts Universe 7 in unnecessary danger just because Goku refuses to change his innocent ways.
8. Gohan’s Tail Poses Unnecessary Risks
Although Kami removed Goku’s tail to prevent Great Ape transformations, Goku never did the same for his son Gohan. He knew the danger the Saiyan tail posed under a full moon.
When Dragon Ball Z began, Goku seemed unconcerned about Gohan’s tail. Gohan transformed into a Great Ape multiple times during the Saiyan Saga. It wouldn’t have been difficult for Goku to take Gohan to Kami and ask him to remove the tail, just as he did for himself. Goku’s avoidance of this issue may not be outright irresponsible, but it was still a choice that put his family at risk.
9. Goku’s Ego Blocks Defeating Super 17
In the Super 17 Saga, Goku fired massive Ki Blasts at Super 17 even though he knew the android could absorb energy. This only made the enemy stronger.
Goku said he was curious if he could overload Super 17. This reckless curiosity broke their combat strategy and put Android 18 in danger.
10. Goku Trusts Frieza in the Tournament of Power
In the Tournament of Power, Goku chose Frieza, a notoriously untrustworthy villain, as Buu’s replacement. While Frieza’s cooperation was essential for victory, this gave him a chance to revive.
The result was Frieza growing stronger, reaching his Black Frieza form, and becoming the greatest threat to the multiverse later on. Goku’s irresponsible action gave Frieza a second chance to harm innocent lives.
