Over the years, the anime world has produced villains who spread terror wherever they go. Even more striking, these villains have defeated Earth’s strongest defenders and came dangerously close to fulfilling their apocalyptic ambitions.
1. Eren Yeager (Attack on Titan)
Eren Yeager is undoubtedly one of the most haunting names, showing no hesitation in his quest to annihilate humanity. As the Founding Titan, he led an army of millions of Wall Titans in the most brutal purge in history. The result was 80% of the global population crushed and burned under the giants’ feet.
Driven by his goal to secure absolute freedom and protect his loved ones on Paradis Island, Eren unleashed the Rumbling as a bloody warning to the world. Though stopped at the last moment, he partially succeeded by leaving only a small fraction of humanity alive amid devastation.
2. Kaiju No. 9 (Kaiju No. 8)
Kaiju No. 9 is one of the most persistent and frustrating villains in the series. He treats the destruction of Japan and humanity’s survival as mere entertainment. His danger lies not only in his physical power but also in his supreme combat intelligence and limitless ability to adapt and evolve.
He has repeatedly pushed the Defense Force to the brink of annihilation with surprise attacks. Even Kafka Hibino in his Kaiju No. 8 form struggles to finish him off, constantly falling into his psychological and tactical traps.
3. Ryomen Sukuna (Jujutsu Kaisen)
To stop Ryomen Sukuna’s killing spree, the strongest sorcerers of the era had to unite and pay a heavy price. Even the mightiest, Gojo Satoru, fell tragically at his hands. With deadly cursed techniques and control over the Divine General Mahoraga, Sukuna turned Japan into a wasteland.
Had Yuji Itadori and his allies failed in the final battle, Sukuna would have overturned the world order, plunging humanity into eternal despair. Fortunately, the heroes turned the tide before things spiraled out of control.
4. Koro-sensei (Assassination Classroom)
From the start, Koro-sensei openly declared his plan to blow up Earth and claimed responsibility for destroying part of the moon. He issued an ultimatum challenging his class 3-E students to assassinate him before the doomsday deadline. Under his guidance, the students transformed into professional assassins.
In truth, Koro-sensei harbored no ill will toward the planet. However, his unstable body, a result of brutal past experiments, threatened to explode biologically. If that happened, Earth and all life would vanish in an instant.
5. Tomura Shigaraki (My Hero Academia)
In the final stages of the war, Tomura Shigaraki fully surpassed All For One’s shadow to become a symbol of destruction. His terrifying power forced protagonist Izuku Midoriya to sacrifice his own energy to save his soul. Wielding the All For One quirk, Shigaraki fought fiercely for the ideals of all villains who believed in him.
Shigaraki repeatedly put Deku in life-threatening situations. Even top heroes from abroad fell before him. Without Deku’s strong will and the sacrifices of other heroes, Shigaraki could have easily conquered and crushed the world.
6. Evangelist (Fire Force)
An abstract entity lurking in the shadows, the Evangelist is the mastermind behind all tragedies in Fire Force. She manipulates the White-Clad organization with the ultimate goal of igniting a massive flame that incinerates the world until nothing remains.
Her aim is to recreate the Great Cataclysm, an event that once destroyed much of Earth. By triggering mass spontaneous human combustion, the Evangelist has killed millions and nearly turned Earth into a blazing dead star.
7. Kaguya Otsutsuki (Naruto)
Before Madara could enjoy the fruits of the Moon Eye Plan, Kaguya Otsutsuki suddenly revived and seized everything. As the final boss of the Fourth Great Ninja War, she faced off directly against the legendary Team 7 led by Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha.
Kaguya’s power far exceeded the ninja alliance, forcing Naruto and Sasuke to use the ultimate sealing jutsu. Without their teamwork, Kaguya would have turned all humanity into White Zetsu and ruled the ninja world forever.
8. Frieza (Dragon Ball)
Throughout the Dragon Ball franchise, Frieza is portrayed as a ruthless tyrant, harboring intense hatred for Saiyans and contempt for all other life forms. No matter how many times he is defeated or killed, he always finds a way to resurrect and return stronger.
Frieza is the only villain on this list who actually succeeded in destroying Earth during the Resurrection of Frieza arc. When cornered in battle, he unleashed the Earth Breaker, obliterating the planet’s core in seconds. Luckily, Whis reversed time by three minutes, giving Goku the chance to fix things and deliver the final blow before Frieza could wreak havoc again.
