In the world of One Piece, Nico Olvia appears only briefly through the painful memories of her daughter, Nico Robin, and the tragic Buster Call on Ohara Island. Despite her limited screen time, this talented woman made a deep impression on fans thanks to her noble ideals and unwavering strength.
Here are 8 fascinating facts about Nico Olvia, the great archaeologist who helped shape the fate of the Devil Child, Nico Robin.
1. Her quest for the Poneglyphs began at age 27

Nico Olvia was one of Ohara’s brilliant minds. She embarked on her mission to find the ancient Poneglyph stones when she was just 27 years old. At that time, her husband had passed away, leaving behind their young daughter, Nico Robin.
Putting aside her maternal instincts for the greater good, Olvia set sail with the Ohara archaeology team, becoming a thorn in the World Government’s side. After six years at sea, her ship was surrounded and captured by the Navy. There, fate brought her face to face with Vice Admiral Jaguar D. Saul, who later freed her and protected Robin.
2. Uncle Oran and Robin’s difficult childhood

Before embarking on her fateful journey, Nico Olvia entrusted Robin to her younger brother Oran. Although Oran cared for his niece, his wife was harsh and favored their own children. This cold treatment from her uncle’s family pushed Robin closer to the Tree of Knowledge and the other archaeologists on Ohara.
When the devastating Buster Call was ordered, Oran and his family likely perished along with the other Ohara residents on the evacuation ship mercilessly sunk by Sakazuki (Akainu).
3. Strange coincidence in birthdays and bounty amounts

The bond between mother and daughter is oddly reflected in numbers. Nico Olvia shares the same birthday as Robin, February 6. Even more intriguing, Olvia’s first and only bounty was 79 million Belly, exactly matching the bounty the World Government placed on Robin’s head when she was just eight years old fleeing Ohara.
4. Sharing the same voice actor

To deepen the connection between the two characters, the One Piece anime producers chose to have the same voice actor portray both Robin and Olvia.
In the Japanese version, the warm, wise voice of both mother and daughter is provided by Yuriko Yamaguchi. In the English dub, Stephanie Young brings both characters to life.
5. Symbolic similarities in their wanted posters

When Robin saw her new wanted poster after the Enies Lobby battle, she was stunned to realize it was almost identical to her mother’s old poster.
Both Olvia’s and Robin’s photos focus on the right side of their faces, positioned slightly to the left of the frame against chaotic battle backgrounds (Olvia with flames, Robin with smoke). Remarkably, both show injuries in matching spots: on the forehead and right cheek.
6. Name inspired by a real archaeological site

Eiichiro Oda is known for weaving historical elements into his story, and Olvia’s name is no exception. “Olvia” is believed to be inspired by Pontic Olbia (or Olbia), a famous archaeological site from an ancient Greek city located on the Black Sea coast in present-day Ukraine. In Japanese, both “Olvia” and “Olbia” are pronounced “Orubia.”
7. A beloved supporting character

Despite her very limited screen time and only appearing in flashbacks, Nico Olvia has captured the hearts of the One Piece fan community. In global popularity polls, she consistently ranks respectably: 44th in the third poll, 122nd in the fourth, 108th in the sixth, and 160th in the seventh.
8. The guiding light for Nico Robin’s ideals

Although her time with her daughter was short, Olvia’s influence on Robin’s life is immeasurable. Her sacrifice and steadfast commitment to preserving history alongside the Ohara scholars became Robin’s guiding principle. Olvia not only passed on the bloodline of an archaeologist but also the will to continue uncovering the Void Century, a mission her generation left unfinished.
Nico Olvia is far more than a background character, she is the origin of the Straw Hat archaeologist’s journey to seek freedom and truth.
