At the end of Jujutsu Kaisen, Yuji defeats Sukuna and saves Megumi Fushiguro, bringing great joy to fans. However, things could have gone in a completely different direction if creator Gege Akutami had chosen an alternate ending. In that version, Nobara and Gojo still die, but in addition, either Yuji or Megumi would also lose their life, creating a deeply tragic conclusion.
The Alternate Ending of Jujutsu Kaisen

Gege Akutami has long revealed that he prepared two endings for Jujutsu Kaisen. The first, which he ultimately chose, features the death of one of the four main characters (Yuji, Megumi, Nobara, and Gojo). In this ending, Yuji saves Megumi, Nobara is brought back, and Gojo Satoru is the sole character to sacrifice himself.
The alternate ending is far more shocking. In this version, only one of the four main characters survives. Nobara, who died during the Shibuya Incident, would still be dead. Gojo Satoru would also remain deceased. Most heartbreakingly, either Yuji or Megumi would also have to die.
Since Yuji is the one who tries to rescue Megumi, it’s likely that Yuji would be the one to sacrifice himself, leaving Megumi as the sole surviving main character.
Gege’s Choice and Fans’ Regret

Fortunately, Gege Akutami did not pick that tragic ending. He decided to let the trio of main characters, Yuji, Megumi, and Nobara, survive and live well after Sukuna’s defeat. However, Gojo Satoru was not revived, and his death remains a source of sadness for many fans.
Although Gojo lost in the Shinjuku Showdown, many fans believe his defeat was driven by plot reasons. Gege had to weaken his powers to allow Sukuna to win. In a truly fair fight, the outcome might have been very different.
