Although it premiered later than many influential TV shows, no one can deny the massive impact Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba has had on the anime industry. This blockbuster series shook the world by becoming one of the few modern classics. Still, many wonder what it would be like if it had been released in the 1990s.
A fan-uploaded video on social media aims to answer that question, depicting the Demon Slayer characters in an art style that evokes the emotional tone of the most beloved 1990s classics.
Fans Excited by 90s-Inspired Redesign of Demon Slayer
On August 14, 2025, X user (formerly Twitter) @Neko_no_geboku shared a video imagining how the Demon Slayer anime characters would look if the series had come out in the 1990s. The video draws inspiration from iconic retro classics like Hunter x Hunter, Inuyasha, and Vampire Hunter D.
While most characters feel distinctly different, the biggest change is seen in the protagonist. Tanjiro appears much more mature, calm, and somber compared to the original series, with much of his youthful cheerfulness hidden behind a serious expression.
Nezuko, Inosuke, and Zenitsu also have more grown-up designs, making the series seem much darker if it had been released in the 90s. Some characters retain their imposing and cold demeanor, such as the Hashira and main villains. The video quickly gained popularity among fans who loved the concept.
The 90s Version of Demon Slayer Looks Truly Intimidating

Besides agreeing that this version of Demon Slayer could have reshaped the anime industry in the 90s, many fans also reached a consensus on how frightening the series might have been. The character designs don’t convey the same hope and joy as the original, as shown by Tanjiro’s calm but grim appearance.
This led fans to imagine that if the series had aired in the 90s, it might have become one of the bloodiest and scariest anime ever released. Despite this, most fans say they would be thrilled to watch the 90s version of the series.
