3. Gohan’s Overconfidence Against Perfect Cell Comes at a Cost
At just 11 years old, Gohan carried the heavy responsibility of saving the world from Cell. Cell was so powerful that even Goku admitted he couldn’t defeat him, but believed his son had the potential to do so.
Cell relentlessly attacked Gohan’s loved ones to break his spirit. The breaking point came when Android 16 was brutally killed right before Gohan’s eyes. This pain and rage pushed Gohan beyond his limits. He became the first Saiyan to reach Super Saiyan 2 and quickly overwhelmed Perfect Cell.
This was one of Dragon Ball Z’s most satisfying moments. Cell, who had always underestimated Gohan, was defeated by a boy. However, Gohan’s overwhelming power made him overly confident. Instead of finishing Cell immediately, he chose to torment him, making Cell pay for his crimes.
This hesitation gave Cell the chance to self-destruct. Goku sacrificed himself to take Cell away, saving Earth from the explosion. Although Gohan ultimately protected the world, he was haunted by regret for not ending the fight sooner.
2. Vegeta Allows Cell to Reach Perfect Form
After training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Vegeta and Future Trunks managed to overpower Cell in his Imperfect form.
At this point, Vegeta had the power to stop Cell and eliminate the threat to Earth. But instead of ending the battle, he wanted to test his own limits.
Vegeta’s biggest goal was still to surpass Goku. Knowing Saiyans grow stronger after each fight, he sought tougher opponents to continue evolving.
So when Cell proposed absorbing Android 18 to complete his transformation, Vegeta didn’t stop him. Despite Future Trunks’ warnings about the consequences, Vegeta refused to intervene. As a result, Cell achieved his Perfect Form and became far stronger than Vegeta had anticipated.
Vegeta’s pride ultimately put the entire Earth at greater risk. He paid a heavy price when he realized he had seriously underestimated Cell’s power.
1. Gohan Fails to Finish Super Buu When He Had the Chance
At the top of the list is Gohan’s failure against Super Buu during the Buu Saga.
With Elder Kai’s help, Gohan unlocked his full potential and reached his Ultimate form. This power even surpassed Goku’s Super Saiyan 3.
Buu was already one of the most dangerous foes the Z Fighters faced. After multiple transformations, his threat grew even more severe, and hope once again rested on Gohan’s shoulders.
Notably, Gohan didn’t need to transform into a Super Saiyan to use this new power. In his Ultimate state, he was more than capable of overpowering Super Buu. Victory was almost certain.
However, limited combat experience and a moment of carelessness stopped him from finishing off his opponent.
Super Buu went on to cause more destruction, forcing Goku to return to the fight. Ultimately, Goku had to gather energy from the entire Earth to create the Spirit Bomb and defeat Buu. The greatest regret is that if Gohan had stayed calm and ended Super Buu when he had the chance, many of the later losses could have been avoided.
