In the world of One Piece, creator Eiichiro Oda is renowned for his masterful attention to detail. Some events initially seem like jokes, comedic relief, or mere transitions between story arcs.
Yet, as the main story reaches its climax, looking back reveals an astonishing “butterfly effect” in One Piece. Many major events that overturned the world order actually began with seemingly trivial moments.
Let’s explore eight moments that appeared insignificant but completely reshaped the history of the Grand Line!
1. A passerby asks Gol D. Roger about the treasure (anime-only)

This detail was added by Toei Animation for the anime and does not appear in the original manga. Before Roger’s execution at Loguetown, an unnamed bystander shouted out asking about the treasure’s location.
This spontaneous question gave the former Pirate King a golden opportunity to smile proudly and deliver his immortal words, sparking the Great Pirate Era. Remember, Roger was terminally ill and the Navy hoped the execution would crush pirate morale. But because of one stranger’s question, the World Government’s plan failed, plunging the era into unprecedented chaos.
2. Coby accidentally finds a mysterious wooden barrel

This event differs slightly between manga and anime, but the outcome is the same. In the manga, Coby finds a barrel washed ashore and mistakes it for a rum barrel. In the anime, Alvida’s crew retrieves the barrel from a merchant ship.
Unexpectedly, inside the barrel is Monkey D. Luffy, sound asleep. If that barrel had been ignored, drifted endlessly, or sunk, the future Pirate King’s journey might have ended before it even began.
3. Luffy’s spontaneous fishing trip in chapter 654

While the Straw Hats were leaving Fish-Man Island for the surface, Luffy punched a deep-sea fish to prepare a meal for Sanji. This triggered a food chain: the small fish was eaten by a bigger fish, which was then swallowed by a giant sea king.
As a result, the Thousand Sunny was swept into the Whitestorm, a massive whirlpool current. This current pushed them off course, leading directly to Punk Hazard.
There, Luffy received a distress call from the island, sparking a fateful alliance with Trafalgar Law. If Luffy hadn’t gone fishing that day, they would have arrived at Raijin Island where Smoker was waiting, and the alliance to overthrow Doflamingo or Yonko Kaido might never have formed.
4. A Roger crew member casually carries a treasure chest at God Valley

The flashback to the legendary God Valley incident shows that amid chaos, Roger’s crew grabbed any treasure chests they could reach. When they opened one on the ship, they found a sleeping infant, Shanks.
This casual act changed history’s course. Shanks was raised aboard the Pirate King’s ship and later stole the Gomu Gomu no Mi, met Luffy, and became a Yonko wielding influence over both the underworld and the World Government.
5. The Red Hair Pirates let Luffy eat the Devil Fruit

Shanks fought CP9 agents to steal the Gomu Gomu no Mi, with theories suggesting he intended to give it to Ace, the former captain’s son. Yet, a pirate crew with masters of Observation Haki like Shanks and Yasopp carelessly allowed 7-year-old Luffy to eat the fruit like dessert at a tavern.
Later, the Five Elders revealed this fruit is actually the Mythical Zoan Model: Nika, a power with its own will that evaded the World Government for 800 years. The Red Hair Pirates’ negligence or the fruit’s own “choice” created the story’s greatest turning point.
6. Luffy tries to catch a bird for food in chapter 8

After leaving Shells Town, Luffy and Zoro drifted at sea with no food. Neither knew navigation well. Hungry, Luffy spotted a bird and jumped to catch it for food. Unexpectedly, the bird was so large it grabbed Luffy’s head and flew straight to Orange Town.
Zoro hurriedly rowed after them, accidentally encountering three of Buggy’s henchmen and forcing them to lead the way to Orange Town. This hilarious coincidence not only saved Luffy from starvation but also led them to meet Nami, the vital navigator who helped the Straw Hats survive and enter the Grand Line.
7. Buggy and Mr. 3 imprisoned in Impel Down

When captured and sent to Impel Down, former Shichibukai Buggy and Galdino (Mr. 3) seemed like has-beens with no influence. However, their timely presence during Luffy’s prison break triggered a seismic event at Marineford.
Mr. 3 used his candle powers to neutralize Magellan’s poison and created the key to free Ace from execution. Meanwhile, a series of misunderstandings during the Summit War boosted Buggy’s legendary reputation, helping him gather a fierce crew, claim a Shichibukai seat, and eventually become a Yonko. All of this was beyond his control or original plans.
8. Shichibukai Dracule Mihawk strolls the seas out of boredom

One fine day, Hawk-Eye Mihawk felt incredibly bored. To pass the time, he single-handedly destroyed Don Krieg’s fleet of 50 warships and chased them from the Grand Line all the way to East Blue.
Mihawk’s boredom set off a chain of events at the Baratie restaurant. Gin met Sanji, the Straw Hats clashed with Don Krieg, and most importantly, Zoro got to face Mihawk. Though a humiliating loss, this glorious defeat made Zoro realize the vast gap to the top and laid the foundation for his vow to never lose again.
