In Bleach, most Bankai completely transform their wielder’s Zanpakuto, granting power far beyond the Shikai state. Some Bankai even alter the user’s appearance, like Ichigo’s Tensa Zangetsu or Rukia’s Hakka no Togame.
However, there are special cases where the Bankai is not just a weapon but manifests as a giant living creature.
1. Konjiki Ashisogi Jizo

Mayuri Kurotsuchi’s Bankai perfectly showcases the madness of the 12th Division captain’s fighting style.
When activated, Konjiki Ashisogi Jizo appears as a giant creature with a caterpillar-like body but the head of a newborn baby. It wears a red cloak, has two yellow arms, and a silver halo above its head, creating a bizarre yet terrifying appearance.
Later, Mayuri upgraded his Bankai into Konjiki Ashisogi Jizo: Matai Fukuin Shotai. It transforms into a massive purple baby capable of producing yellow “offspring” from a torn belly to adapt to different opponents. This is one of the rare Bankai with evolutionary abilities in Bleach.
2. Kokujo Tengen Myo’o

Sajin Komamura’s Bankai takes the form of a colossal warrior.
Kokujo Tengen Myo’o appears as a fully armored samurai hundreds of meters tall, moving in perfect sync with Komamura. Every sword swing and attack from the captain is mirrored by this giant with overwhelming power.
More impressively, after Komamura regains his human form, his Bankai evolves into Dangai Joe. The armor disappears to reveal the true demonic body beneath. In this state, the Bankai is nearly immune to all damage until its time limit expires.
3. Kannonbiraki Benihime Aratame

Although it appeared only once during the battle with Askin Nakk Le Vaar, Kisuke Urahara’s Bankai left a strong impression on fans.
Kannonbiraki Benihime Aratame manifests as a giant woman with black hair braided into a circular crown. Her arms resemble mannequin joints, and her red kimono gives her a look that is both beautiful and intimidating.
Uniquely, Urahara fights using his sealed sword while the Bankai behind him “disassembles” and “reassembles” any part it touches, whether it’s a person’s body, weapons, or the environment. Thanks to its near-limitless restructuring ability, this Bankai is considered one of the most versatile and dangerous in Bleach.
4. Hihio Zabimaru

This is Renji Abarai’s first Bankai before he awakened his true power at the Royal Palace.
Since his Zanpakuto’s soul had not fully accepted him, Renji only possessed part of Zabimaru’s true power. Therefore, Hihio Zabimaru mainly takes the form of a giant snake made of multiple bone segments, while his true Zanpakuto spirit is a fusion of a monkey and a snake.
Because it was an incomplete version, this Bankai showed many weaknesses and was even destroyed by Byakuya Kuchiki during their Soul Society confrontation. After training with Squad Zero, Renji finally awakened So’o Zabimaru, his complete Bankai with superior strength.
