In the world of One Piece, the letter “D” is more than just a character, it carries the weight of history and destiny. From Monkey D. Luffy to Gol D. Roger, those who bear this initial have always struck fear into the World Government. But what does it truly mean?
Since the beginning of the journey, a small letter placed between the first and last names of some of the most significant characters has become the greatest mystery in the series. Those with the “D” are known as the “Natural Enemies of the Gods.” While fans await an official explanation from Oda, the community has come up with some highly convincing theories.
1. Descendants

This theory suggests that “D” stands for Descendants, heirs of a glorious ancient kingdom wiped out during the Void Century. They inherit the will and conflicts of the past. A prime example is the Nefertari family. Originally named Nefertari D. Lili, the “D” was erased from history to hide this secret.
2. Devil

This is the classic explanation. Since the Celestial Dragons see themselves as “gods,” those who oppose them are labeled as Devils. However, as the truth about Imu and the Five Elders emerges, revealing their sinister nature, people begin to question who the real devils are. Perhaps “D” is a name used by the victors (World Government) to slander the heroes on the losing side.
3. Dawn

This is the strongest theory conceptually. “D” stands for Dawn, the dawn of a new world. From the first chapter titled “Romance Dawn” to Luffy’s Gear 5 techniques like Dawn Rifle and Dawn Cymbal, everything points to ending Imu’s dark reign and bringing light back.
4. Divine

A recent shocking theory suggests “D” actually means Divine. According to this, those with “D” are the true gods of the past. After being overthrown by dark forces (Imu and allies), history was rewritten so that the real gods became enemies, while the true devils took the throne and claimed divinity.
5. Dream

Philosophically, “D” could stand for Dream. Every individual with this initial carries great dreams and an unyielding will to never surrender to adversity. Whether it’s Luffy’s dream to become Pirate King or Blackbeard’s ambition to rule the world, they share the trait of daring to dream big and pursue it.
6. “D” Is Not a Letter!

The wildest but most intriguing theory is that “D” is actually a symbol.
First, the smile (:D). Those with the will of “D” always wear a bright smile even when facing death (like Roger, Saul, Ace).
Second, the crescent moon. The shape of the letter D closely resembles half a moon. This directly connects to the murals in Elbaf about the “moon dwellers,” opening a new chapter about the extraterrestrial origins of ancient races.
