Imu’s appearance in Chapter 1179 not only shook Elbaph but also raised major questions about the entire power system in One Piece. A seemingly ordinary detail about the name of Imu’s ability hides some extremely strange mysteries.
1. A Name Structure That Breaks the Rules

In the world of One Piece, Eiichiro Oda has always followed a strict naming pattern for Devil Fruits: [Concept] + [Repeated Word] + no Mi. Examples include Gomu Gomu no Mi, Mera Mera no Mi, and Hito Hito no Mi.
However, Imu’s power completely breaks this rule. It is simply called Akuma no Mi (アクマの実). There is no repeated word and no clear concept. It sounds more like a “category” or “origin” rather than the name of a specific fruit. This suggests Imu’s ability lies outside the system we have known for over 20 years.
2. A Strange Mix of Zoan and Paramecia

Imu clearly shows transformation abilities when facing Sabo, even possessing a “flying cloud” (hagoromo), a hallmark of awakened Zoan types. Yet, when appearing in Elbaph, Imu demonstrates awakened Paramecia powers by bringing plants and architecture to life.
In One Piece history, only one fruit has similarly broken boundaries: the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika. This similarity turns the battle between Luffy and Imu into a clash of two “untamable” beings who defy any classification rules in the world.
3. The Mystery Behind Writing “Akuma” in Katakana

This is a very subtle detail that only deep-thinking fans notice. Usually, the phrase “Devil Fruit” is written as 悪魔の実 (Akuma no Mi), where “Akuma” uses Kanji clearly meaning “devil”.
However, for Imu, Oda uses アクマの実, written in Katakana. In Japanese, Katakana is often used for foreign words or to emphasize sounds without confirming the original meaning. This implies that “Akuma” here might not mean “devil” as we understand it. It could be a proper name, an ancient race, or an entity from another dimension that the World Government has deliberately hidden.
4. No Classification at All

Oda is usually very clear about classifying abilities, even the most mysterious fruits. But with Imu, there is absolutely no note indicating whether it is Paramecia, Zoan, or Logia.
Could this be the “original Devil Fruit”, the source of all powers? If the World Government once renamed the Nika fruit as Gomu Gomu to deceive the world, it’s very possible that the name Akuma no Mi is also a product of the highest level of information manipulation.
