Eiichiro Oda Explains Why One Piece Live-Action Season 2 Feels More Fantastical

The new season embraces the manga’s wild and magical elements, moving beyond the grounded tone of season 1.

Following the huge success of the first season, the One Piece live-action series has officially returned on Netflix with season 2, continuing to bring Eiichiro Oda’s legendary manga world to life. However, fans quickly noticed a clear shift. The new season leans into the fantastical, becoming wilder and much closer to the original manga’s crazy spirit compared to the more grounded first season.

Recently, Eiichiro Oda himself spoke out to explain the bold creative shift behind this change.

From grounded characters to full fantasy

In season 2, as Luffy and the Straw Hat crew enter the Grand Line, viewers are treated to bizarre islands and a lineup of strange allies and enemies. On the official podcast, Oda revealed that these extreme fantasy elements represent a deliberate shift by the production team.

“In season one, the live-action team focused on exploring the human side of the characters rather than diving into extreme fantasy elements,” Oda explained. The initial goal was to make the story feel more relatable and realistic to a broad audience. But by season two, Oda asked the team: “We need to start unleashing those fantasy elements so Luffy can face powerful foes more convincingly. The audience needs to get used to the weirdest parts of the manga starting now.”

Finding a “common language” for live-action Luffy

This change also came from Oda’s full trust in the live-action cast. He admitted that during season 1’s production, he was very strict and often said things like “Luffy wouldn’t say or do that” because in his mind, he only saw the manga’s version of Luffy.

But after watching Iñaki Godoy’s performance, Oda’s perspective shifted completely: “Watching the live-action footage, I realized Iñaki’s Luffy could really pull that off. Now we have a ‘common language’ about the character. We understand what live-action Luffy should and shouldn’t do, which made producing season 2 much smoother.”

The perfect balance of realism and manga madness

Season 2’s transformation has been met with overwhelmingly positive fan reactions. One standout moment is Luffy singing with the whale Laboon, a scene that is both humorous and perfectly captures One Piece’s quirky charm.

The success of season 2 lies in maintaining the realistic visual quality of its predecessor while skillfully weaving in the original manga’s free-spirited, imaginative essence. With season 3 already in production, fans are eagerly awaiting which wild and crazy elements will make their way to the screen next.
