After much anticipation, the Straw Hat crew’s journey on Netflix is back with season 2. Spanning 8 episodes, this season takes us from Loguetown, over Reverse Mountain, all the way to Whiskey Peak, Little Garden, and the winter island Drum.
To condense such a massive storyline, the production team made some bold changes. Some details may disappoint fans, while others have sparked heated debates. Let’s take a look at the 7 biggest changes in this One Piece adaptation!

1. Bartolomeo appears early and plays a key role
Right from the first episode in Loguetown, fans were stunned to see Bartolomeo. In the original manga and anime, this obsessed fan shows up much later, but in the live-action, Bart acts as Luffy’s “guide.” Initially planning to scam Luffy, the show cleverly sets up Bartolomeo’s much bigger role in the series’ future.
2. The fight between Luffy and Zoro is cut
This is a major disappointment. At Whiskey Peak, the manga and anime show Luffy misunderstanding and fighting Zoro, thinking he’s mistreating the locals. Netflix decided to remove this to focus on Zoro’s solo battle against Baroque Works’ agents. Although the fight between teammates is lost, Zoro shines brilliantly, inspired by the “Mihawk spirit.”
3. The surprise appearance of Sabo
Just as fans were focused on Luffy’s father Dragon showing up to save him from Smoker, Netflix dropped a bombshell: Sabo appears in person. In the original story, Sabo doesn’t show up this early. The actor’s identity is still secret, and it’s unclear if he’ll return in season 3, but this is definitely one of the season’s most shocking moments.
4. Smoker directly confronts Baroque Works
To give the Navy characters more screen time, the live-action created a new storyline for Smoker and Tashigi. Instead of just chasing Luffy, they directly clash with Baroque Works agents at a government base. This change makes Smoker more dangerous and layered than just being a relentless pursuer.
5. Brook appears before becoming a skeleton
Another character shows up earlier than expected: Brook. In a flashback involving the whale Laboon, viewers see Brook as a living person (played by Martial Batchamen). In the original, Brook only appears in the Thriller Bark arc as a skeleton. This detail has fans curious about whether Netflix will use CGI or makeup to bring the “undead musician” to life later.
6. The giant snow rabbits Lapan are missing
On Drum Island, Luffy and Sanji usually face off against the fierce snow rabbits called Lapan. However, the live-action skips this battle. As a fun Easter egg, Netflix shows a rabbit head hanging inside a Drum resident’s home, subtly confirming the creatures exist in the show’s world but don’t fight on screen.
7. Chess and Kuromarimo don’t fuse
In the final battle on Drum Island in episode 8, Wapol’s loyal henchmen Chess and Kuromarimo face Sanji and Chopper. However, their signature fusion using the Munch Munch fruit’s power doesn’t happen. Though they don’t combine into a single entity like in the anime, this duo still gives the Straw Hats a tough fight before being defeated.
