When Goku unlocked Ultra Instinct during the Tournament of Power, fans expected Vegeta to soon achieve a similar form. However, Dragon Ball Super took a bold turn by having the two heroes follow separate power paths instead of sharing the same transformation.
Vegeta chose his own proud path with the Ultra Ego form. While this state still has flaws, its long-term potential could make Ultra Ego the strongest fighting form in the entire Dragon Ball franchise once fully mastered.
1. The true nature of Ultra Ego

At its core, Ultra Ego is a divine-level transformation that stands in direct contrast to Ultra Instinct. While Ultra Instinct (an Angel technique) requires the user to keep their mind completely calm so their body can instinctively dodge attacks, Ultra Ego is a technique unique to the Gods of Destruction.
This exclusive ability lets the user manipulate a special God Ki called Destruction Energy, using the Hakai technique to erase matter down to the molecular level. Realizing he would never surpass Goku by following the same path, Vegeta abandoned Ultra Instinct to embrace the unique strengths of a proud warrior. After training with Beerus, the God of Destruction, the Saiyan prince unlocked Ultra Ego.
2. The fatal flaw causing Vegeta’s setbacks

There’s no denying Ultra Ego is one of the most terrifying power forms. During the Granolah arc, the Cerealian easily defeated Goku’s Ultra Instinct with a single vital strike but was completely overwhelmed by Vegeta’s raw Ultra Ego power.
However, this deadly battle revealed a critical weakness in Ultra Ego’s early form. Unlike Ultra Instinct, which helps the body automatically dodge to minimize damage, Ultra Ego works the opposite way by actively absorbing hits.
This form converts the damage the user takes into “fuel” that boosts the power of their next attack. The more Vegeta gets beaten up, the stronger his explosive power becomes.
It sounds impressive, but in this early version, Vegeta has no way to reduce the physical damage to his body. If an opponent deals more damage than he can endure, the Saiyan prince collapses and loses consciousness before landing a decisive counterattack, as seen in his unfortunate loss to Granolah.
3. When Ultra Ego reaches perfection: limitless power beyond all limits
When Ultra Ego first appeared, it faced criticism for its seemingly self-destructive mechanics. But many fans forget that Vegeta’s fight with Granolah was the first time he activated this form. It was still an incomplete version, much like Goku’s initial Ultra Instinct Sign.
The key to perfecting Ultra Ego lies in increasing the body’s durability and toughness. Look at how Goku uses perfected Ultra Instinct. He can harden his body so much that a powerful being like Moro breaks his arm punching him.
If Vegeta can apply this body-hardening principle to Ultra Ego by mastering his abundant Ki control, he will create a game-breaking paradox. He would absorb power from enemy attacks while taking no real physical damage.
Once this fatal flaw is fixed, Vegeta’s power growth in battle could theoretically become limitless. He would continuously absorb hits, endlessly increase his Ki, and unleash devastating counterattacks.
Currently, Vegeta already delivers some of the heaviest punches with immense destructive power thanks to Destruction Energy. When Ultra Ego reaches its ultimate perfected state, combining Hakai’s supreme offense with unbreakable defense, the Saiyan prince will become an unstoppable warrior no mortal or even god could stand against.
