5 Anime That Dropped the Ball After a Strong First Season

Many anime lose their spark over time, but it's especially disappointing when it happens just as they start getting good.

Some of the best anime keep getting better with each season thanks to fast pacing, well-crafted plot twists, and captivating character moments. Unfortunately, some series fail to maintain these strengths despite promising beginnings. Here are 5 anime that took a nosedive after strong first seasons!

5. The Promised Neverland

The Promised Neverland kicked off with an incredible first season, starting with a shocking episode that hooked viewers instantly. The dark reveal that Emma and the orphans at Grace Field House were being raised as food for demons was gripping. With the kids escaping the walls at the end of season 1, the potential to expand the world was huge.

Sadly, season 2 never lived up to that promise and saw a significant drop in quality. The main issue was the anime diverging from the original manga by Kaiu Shirai and Posuka Demizu, a move rarely welcomed by fans. Season 2 skipped many interesting plot points and ended abruptly, damaging the overall story. This is a prime example of an anime cooling off just when it should have been heating up.

4. One-Punch Man

One-Punch Man was a huge hit when it debuted in 2015, produced by Madhouse. Its engaging superhero world, lovable protagonist, and well-animated action scenes made it a standout. It seemed poised to become as massive as newer hits like Demon Slayer and My Hero Academia.

However, the series switched studios from Madhouse to J.C. Staff for season 2, and the quality took a noticeable hit. The animation faced criticism, and the storytelling lost its tightness. This was especially disappointing since fan-favorite villain Garou made his appearance in this season. Season 2 should have built on season 1’s success but instead fell flat. The fact that season 3 only arrived after a six-year wait further hurt the series’ momentum.

3. Re:Zero, Starting Life in Another World

Subaru Natsuki in Re:Zero anime

Re:Zero began with a strong premise: Subaru is transported to a fantasy world and repeatedly restarts time after dying. The series executed this well, keeping viewers hooked even as the time loop concept became less novel. Unfortunately, this appeal only lasted so long. Re:Zero started to decline in season 2 and felt very different by season 3.

Season 2 had several issues, most notably slower pacing and lower production quality compared to the previous season. This made it harder for viewers to stay engaged, and many supporting characters didn’t get the attention they deserved. While season 3 tried to fix pacing problems, it still hasn’t matched the excitement level of season 1.

2. Vinland Saga

Thorfinn in Vinland Saga season 2

Vinland Saga underwent a major shift after its first season. While Thorfinn’s story slowed down, it’s clear the anime’s quality dipped. A journey focused on healing and peace doesn’t always make for the most gripping TV. Season 1 was packed with action and complex emotions, and although season 2 regained some of that by the end, it dragged in the middle.

Season 2 was humorously compared to a farming simulator game, highlighting its slow pace. There were ways to improve the pacing, but much of season 2 felt too slow despite solid character development.

1. Sword Art Online

Sword Art Online has four seasons, but only the first one received widespread praise, mainly for the Aincrad arc. The anime’s concept was intriguing: 10,000 players trapped in a video game where death means real death, creating high stakes from the start.

Unfortunately, the main story changed completely in the latter half of season 1 and lost much of its appeal. The characters lacked depth, and their relationships sometimes felt awkward or even unsettling. The series’ quality has fluctuated since then, but it’s safe to say Sword Art Online peaked with its initial story arc.
