As summer 2025 came to a close, many ongoing anime series also wrapped up their journeys. Looking back, fans witnessed some of the year’s best titles, including Takopi’s Original Sin and the impressive returns of Dandadan and Kaiju No. 8 in their second seasons.
However, the most anticipated comeback was My Dress-Up Darling Season 2, continuing the gentle romantic story between Marin Kitagawa and Gojo Wakana alongside their cosplay adventures. Unfortunately, this season offered little progress in the core storyline: the relationship between Marin and Gojo. Most romance anime strengthen the main couple’s bond in the first season or at the latest by the second, but Dress-Up Darling failed to do so.
Season 2 Focuses Mainly on Cosplay and Fan Service
The first season of My Dress-Up Darling mainly showcased the variety of cosplay while still prioritizing fan service, leading fans to believe the romance would develop more deeply in Season 2.
Yet throughout the 12 episodes of the latest season, the story almost exclusively focused on consecutive cosplay events, introducing new characters and revisiting old ones, all highlighting a shared love for dressing up. What hurt fans most was that although the story seemed to lay the groundwork for romantic progress near the end of Season 2, the series abruptly concluded in deep disappointment with an original anime scene that many fear signals the end of the entire series.
Disappointing Original Ending: Is This the End for My Dress-Up Darling?
When the cosplay event “Coffin”, the final arc of My Dress-Up Darling Season 2, began to unfold, fans held their breath as Marin seemed ready to confess her feelings to Gojo. With a storyline poised for a major step forward, anticipation for the couple finally coming together reached its peak, especially after an entire season with almost no romantic development.
However, when the decisive moment arrived, instead of seeing Marin summon the courage to express her feelings in the finale, the anime team inserted a scene of Marin and Gojo taking a selfie, ending the season on a deeply unsatisfying and frustrating note.
This original anime ending feels out of place and may even suggest the series has no plans to continue. The manga concluded earlier this year, and with Season 2 adapting up to chapter 86, about 30 chapters remain unfinished. Since there has been no announcement of a third season, this ending hints that the anime might stop here without adapting the remaining content from Shinichi Fukuda.
Given that previous seasons covered over 40 manga chapters each, the remaining material is insufficient for a full third season. The most optimistic hope is for a short OVA to resolve Marin and Gojo’s relationship. My Dress-Up Darling went off track by focusing heavily on fan service and cosplay events across both seasons while neglecting romantic development. This neglect of the core romance may be why the series is ending, and it’s likely we won’t see another official anime season.
