Cosplay has long been an essential passion for anime fans in Japan. It’s not just a way to show love for favorite characters but also a chance for fans to express creativity and personality. Recently, a survey by internet research company NEXER INC. unveiled the top 10 anime characters Japanese women most want to cosplay.
The survey, which included 300 women aged 20 to 60, revealed a familiar frontrunner: Usagi Tsukino from Sailor Moon, a character who has become a legendary childhood icon for millions.
Usagi Tsukino: An Irreplaceable Childhood Icon

Usagi Tsukino from the anime Sailor Moon topped the survey. Although Sailor Moon debuted decades ago, Usagi remains a beloved childhood symbol for millions. Her iconic blue and white sailor outfit paired with cute accessories and classic poses makes her the number one cosplay choice.

“The sailor uniform has always been my dream,” shared one survey participant. “The poses are easy and look great in photos,” another added. This blend of nostalgia and practicality helps Usagi maintain her top spot.
Variety in Cosplay Choices

Coming in second is Kiki, the 13-year-old witch from Studio Ghibli’s film. Kiki’s simple black dress and large red bow are praised as “simple yet adorable,” “instantly inspiring cosplay.” A 40-year-old fan commented, “It looks easy to make, and I’ve loved this movie for years.”

Two classic icons, Fujiko Mine from Lupin the Third and Maetel from Galaxy Express 999, highlight the appeal of mature, alluring characters. Fujiko’s voluminous brown hair and curvy figure were described as a “feminine beauty icon.” In contrast, Maetel’s blonde hair and mysterious black cloak exude an enigmatic charm. This “elegant lady” is especially popular among women aged 50 to 60.
The top 10 most desired anime cosplay characters for 2025 are:
Usagi Tsukino – Sailor Moon
Kiki – Kiki’s Delivery Service
Fujiko Mine – Lupin the Third
Maetel – Galaxy Express 999
Shinobu Kocho – Demon Slayer and Frieren – Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (tied)
Nezuko Kamado – Demon Slayer
Conan Edogawa – Detective Conan
Maomao – The Apothecary Diaries
Lum – Urusei Yatsura
What Drives Women’s Cosplay Choices?

The survey also revealed that ease of cosplay strongly influences choices. The simpler and easier the outfit is to prepare, the more popular it becomes, as seen with Kiki and Conan. On the other hand, characters with iconic, distinctive styles like Sailor Moon and Fujiko continue to captivate thanks to their nostalgic value.
This shows cosplay is more than just “dressing up.” For Japanese women, it’s a way to express identity, memories, and admiration for beloved characters. At least for 2025, Sailor Moon’s Usagi remains the queen in the hearts of female cosplayers in Japan.
