The anime industry is very familiar with Hiromu Arakawa, the creator of the famous shōnen manga Fullmetal Alchemist. After the success of Silver Spoon, Arakawa is back with a new work titled Daemons of the Shadow Realm. This series, collected into 10 volumes, has just been confirmed for an anime adaptation and is expected to become the true successor to Demon Slayer.

The anime adaptation of Daemons of the Shadow Realm was announced at Crunchyroll’s Anime Expo 2025 panel. The platform also confirmed it will exclusively stream the series in multiple regions worldwide.
Daemons of the Shadow Realm: Inspired by Fullmetal Alchemist with a Twist
Serialized in Monthly Shonen Gangan since 2021, Daemons of the Shadow Realm follows twins Yuru and Asa, who inherit the power to control powerful supernatural beings called Daemons. Separated since childhood, they must fight to find their way back to each other.

Fans familiar with Arakawa’s work will recognize Daemons of the Shadow Realm as a return to her signature fantasy storytelling style, echoing many themes from Fullmetal Alchemist. While there are differences, at its core, Daemons of the Shadow Realm also tells the story of two siblings, drawing a clear parallel to Edward and Alphonse Elric.
However, the key difference lies in the nature of their relationship. Edward and Alphonse rely completely on each other, bonded by absolute trust. In contrast, Yuru cannot place the same trust in Asa. Edward and Alphonse have little else but each other, creating a deeply interdependent bond. Meanwhile, Yuru was raised safely in a village, while Asa has more knowledge of the outside world.
Essentially, Arakawa has created a complete reversal of Edward and Alphonse’s relationship dynamic in Daemons of the Shadow Realm.
Similarities Between Daemons of the Shadow Realm and Demon Slayer

Fullmetal Alchemist was a defining work of the last decade, while Daemons of the Shadow Realm offers a much more modern storytelling approach. Beyond comparisons to Fullmetal Alchemist, Daemons of the Shadow Realm shares many similarities with Demon Slayer. Both focus on sibling relationships tested by demonic and evil forces.
Because of this, Daemons of the Shadow Realm is well-positioned to fill the gap left by Demon Slayer. Even the titles share a certain similarity. Moreover, with renowned studio Bones producing the anime, fans can expect a quality on par with their previous works.
As Demon Slayer’s story reaches its peak, Arakawa’s storytelling will once again captivate audiences, filling the void left by the series.
