My Dress-Up Darling Season 2 was one of the most anticipated anime of 2025. The first season, released in 2022, won over audiences with its sweet blend of romance, cosplay, and character growth. However, when Season 2 premiered this summer, it failed to maintain that momentum. The beloved series lost its charm and became a major disappointment.
Season 2 Feels Disjointed with Weak Story Connections
Season 2 continues the story from Season 1. Marin Kitagawa remains passionate about cosplay, while Wakana Gojo still enjoys making costumes, and both continue to hide their growing feelings for each other. Although Season 2 introduces interesting new characters like Marin’s group of friends, the show lacks something crucial: cohesion.
Season 1 perfectly combined cosplay with character development. Episodes focused on cosplay also advanced the plot and character arcs. In contrast, Season 2 clearly divides its focus. Episodes tend to either concentrate on character moments or cosplay scenes. When an episode focuses on characters, cosplay is almost completely sidelined. Conversely, episodes centered on cosplay slow down the story and pacing.
This split causes the tone and pacing to feel uneven and fragmented, unlike the smooth flow of Season 1. It turns My Dress-Up Darling Season 2 into a challenging watch, almost like two separate series.
Bright Spots in a Mostly Dull Season
The criticisms above might make you think Season 2 is terrible, but that’s not entirely true. The show is just less effective at storytelling. Still, there is a glimmer of hope in an otherwise bland season.
Episodes 2 and 3 introduce Chitose Amano, a versatile gamer whom Gojo and Marin meet at a convention. These episodes perfectly blend cosplay passion with overarching story and character development. They feel like an ideal emotional continuation of Season 1’s story. While they don’t focus on Marin and Gojo’s romance, these episodes deepen each character’s growth and give fans a new character to connect with.
So far, 10 episodes of My Dress-Up Darling Season 2 have aired. Fans hope the series can regain its footing in the final two episodes and return to its former quality. Without a breakthrough, though, Season 2 will sadly be remembered as a letdown.
