Dragon Ball Super is currently on a break, but excitement for the next arc, especially the long-awaited Black Frieza saga, is hotter than ever. Since Black Frieza made a striking debut in the Granolah arc, fans have been eager to see him face off against the Z fighters.
However, despite Black Frieza’s terrifying power, there is another character who poses an even greater hidden threat to our heroes. This character is currently an ally, but could easily become a major danger at any moment in the story: Broly!

Broly Is Not Evil but Struggles with Self-Control
Broly first appeared in Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan and its sequels. Although popular, the Broly saga in DBZ is not canon within the manga timeline. However, Dragon Ball Super reintroduced Broly in the movie Dragon Ball Super: Broly, and he was briefly mentioned in the manga, officially making him part of the Super canon.
Notably, Broly in Dragon Ball Super is not the villainous character from DBZ, where he was a violent, mentally unstable killer. Instead, he is mostly quiet, polite, gentle, and calm. Yet once provoked, his Saiyan nature awakens, and he enters a berserk state. When transformed into the Legendary Super Saiyan, Broly begins destroying everything without restraint. In some ways, he resembles Gohan when unlocking his hidden power, but Broly loses control far more easily.

Broly’s Tremendous Destructive Potential
Broly has befriended Goku and Vegeta, becoming their newest rival. Fearing Frieza might hunt Broly, Goku took him to Beerus’s planet for training to help Broly fight without losing control. Broly later became fascinated by how Gohan could unleash his Beast form without going berserk. After fighting Gohan, it’s clear Broly can match the power of the Beast form. Toyotaro, the Dragon Ball Super artist, confirmed Broly’s strength rivals the strongest transformations of Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, and Piccolo.
So far in Dragon Ball Super, Broly has only been seen transforming into the Legendary Super Saiyan, a rare form considered the ultimate version of the standard Super Saiyan. However, there might be even stronger forms, previously shown in Dragon Ball Heroes, possibly the most powerful Broly has ever achieved in any Dragon Ball media (such as Legendary Super Saiyan 2, LSSJ3, and the Great Ape form of LSSJ). Toyotaro included Broly’s Great Ape and LSSJ4 forms in the Dragon Ball Heroes: Victory Mission manga, hinting that any of these could eventually appear in Dragon Ball Super. If Legendary Super Saiyan Broly is on par with the strongest Z fighters, then a Legendary Super Saiyan 4 Broly could surpass them all!

Will Broly Become an Enemy Again?
What makes Dragon Ball Super’s Broly unique is that he is kind and lovable but can suddenly turn into a ruthless killer when overwhelmed and losing control in his Legendary Super Saiyan form. Because of this, Broly could still become a major threat, especially if he unlocks evolved Legendary Super Saiyan forms, like LSSJ4. He might even become stronger than Black Frieza!
However, judging by Dragon Ball Super’s current storyline, it seems Broly will improve his self-control and support the Z fighters in the potential Black Frieza arc, since Frieza is very likely to hunt him down. Either way, the Black Frieza arc will be the perfect chance to showcase Broly unlocking LSSJ4. From there, the story could portray him as an ally, an accidental enemy, or even both, first helping, then losing control.
