Isekai Anime Faces Backlash Over Repetitive and Low-Quality Shows

Fans grow tired as too many new Isekai series copy the same formula

Isekai, or “another world,” is one of the most popular anime genres today, whisking viewers away from reality with fantastical adventures. Centered around characters who are transported, die and are reincarnated, or get trapped in games, Isekai offers countless imaginative settings, from medieval kingdoms to futuristic worlds.

Isekai has produced some of the biggest modern hits like Re:Zero, The Eminence in Shadow, and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. These series stand out by breaking molds, crafting memorable characters, and building detailed worlds. This endless potential is what made Isekai a top-tier genre.

The Major Problem Today: Oversaturation and Absurd Series

As Isekai’s popularity grows, the anime industry is flooded with new series, leading to a serious issue: quantity is overwhelming quality.

Every season, streaming platforms release a flood of new Isekai shows, but most follow the same predictable formula, making new titles increasingly dull and repetitive.

1. The Boring Repetition of Formulas

Isekai stories often recycle key elements, such as protagonists with extraordinary powers or deep knowledge (level-up systems, skill trees), combined with harem or reverse harem setups. This repetition has made it hard for fans to stay engaged.

2. Absurd Premises That Push Limits

Beyond repetitive formulas, more series now feature ridiculous premises that parody other shows, like Reborn as a Vending Machine or I Now Wander the Dungeon.

While some fans enjoy these boundary-pushing titles, many longtime viewers and newcomers feel alienated and tired of the Isekai genre.

3. Poor Production Quality

Many Isekai series fail due to weak execution. Shows like Conception (2018) suffer from bland stories, shallow characters, and rushed pacing. When mediocre adaptations flood release schedules, the genre’s reputation suffers.

Isekai Needs to Focus on Quality Over Quantity to Survive

Oversaturation has made it harder to find unique stories. With so many Isekai adaptations, viewers risk burnout and high-quality shows get lost in the flood of generic content.

The only hope for Isekai to regain its appeal is for anime studios and production teams to prioritize quality over quantity.

By investing in original stories, well-developed characters, and purposeful execution, studios can produce fewer but stronger series that attract more attention.

Focusing on quality will not only satisfy longtime fans but also make the genre more inviting to newcomers, ensuring Isekai remains a leading anime genre instead of collapsing under its own weight.
