On July 8, Superman, the first blockbuster of the new DC Universe (DCU), will hit theaters, introducing a completely different take on the iconic hero.
However, after several trailers have been released, many fans have expressed doubts about the project. Clark Kent not only rarely showcases his godlike powers but is often beaten up badly.
In the current DCU, Superman isn’t just suffering crushing defeats. He’s seriously injured, coughing up blood and unable to get back up, captured and locked in a glass cell. Even the Fortress of Solitude, Superman’s secret and impregnable base, is invaded and ransacked by villain Lex Luthor and his forces in the latest trailer.
As president of DC Studios and director of this opening film, James Gunn is well aware of fans’ concerns. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, he openly admitted that he intentionally weakened Superman’s powers.
“I want Superman to be vulnerable,” Gunn said. “Lately, I keep seeing online debates about ‘Who would win?’ in battles between Homelander and Superman, Adam Warlock and Brightburn, and so on. And I think, ‘This is probably the dumbest conversation ever.’”
“They mean whoever wins those fights is the strongest, right? Well, I could just create a character called God Man who can destroy opponents with a blink. Then I’d win every time. Every battle would be a sure win.”
“Honestly, I’ve talked to many people who say, ‘I like Batman more because Batman can be defeated.’ And I get that. So we’re going to have a Superman who can lose.”
Of course, Gunn’s comments likely just scratch the surface. Mentioning Batman suggests the director has already mapped out clear, distinct directions for the DCU over the next decade.
Batman is famous for being a hero without superpowers who can still stand alongside powerful individuals. With his determination and intelligence, the Dark Knight quickly became a key member of the Justice League, winning the hearts of generations of fans.
According to Gunn, Superman doesn’t need to be overwhelmingly powerful or invincible. There are many ways to tell compelling stories with this character. His noble character is one of them.
Although Kal-El comes from the planet Krypton, he was raised and grew up on Earth. Beneath that steel exterior lies a kind heart, innate goodness, and a deep understanding of the planet shaped by the love and upbringing of the Kent family.
Clark Kent is just as important as Superman. If we see this hero struggle in the DCU blockbuster, it’s that humanity that could be the source of strength helping him rise again.
Superman can stumble and fail, but he is always a hero who overcomes adversity to protect the world he loves. That story is far more interesting than ending every battle in seconds.
