As season 3 airs and the story moves toward its climax, let’s look back at five characters whose “broken” powers could only be overcome by the protagonist’s narrative spotlight.
5. Kenjaku
In a world where brute strength often dominates, Kenjaku proves how intellect combined with cursed techniques can create a terrifying force. Having survived for thousands of years by swapping bodies, Kenjaku has amassed vast knowledge and possesses powerful techniques like Geto Suguru’s Cursed Spirit Manipulation and Kaori Itadori’s Reverse Gravity.
To defeat this entity, creator Gege Akutami had to introduce a character who literally bends reality. Without strict plot constraints, Kenjaku’s cunning and arsenal of cursed techniques would make him nearly unbeatable.
4. Hiromi Higuruma
Having awakened his cursed technique just a month ago during the Culling Game, Higuruma has already reached the pinnacle of cursed techniques: Domain Expansion. His domain sets up a courtroom where opponents face a fair trial. If found guilty, they lose their cursed techniques or even face execution.
Higuruma’s potential is so great he could rival Yuji at his peak. In fact, during their final battle, if not for Sukuna’s thick “plot armor,” Higuruma’s death sentence strike would have ended the Cursed King instantly.
3. Fumihiko Takaba
Like Higuruma, Takaba is an “entertainment-type” player with one of the most absurd abilities in the series: Comedian. This technique lets Takaba reshape reality into whatever he finds funny. If he thinks Sukuna dying is a joke, then Sukuna will actually die.
Takaba is so pure in his perception that no attack or domain can harm him unless he finds it frightening. Many fans even rate him stronger than Gojo Satoru, with the only condition being that he remains unaware of his own technique. Gege created a character so powerful that even the author doesn’t know how an opponent could normally defeat him.
2. Ryomen Sukuna
Born in the Heian era, Sukuna is the living embodiment of twisted, ruthless evolution. He devoured his twin siblings in the womb, slaughtered countless people, and was worshiped as a god of destruction.
Nearly all surviving sorcerers had to unite, use countless layers of strategy, and sacrifice themselves to defeat Sukuna. Without the protagonist’s miraculous power-ups, no one would have come close to touching the Cursed King. He is not only immensely strong but also extremely cunning, with battle IQ honed during the golden age of cursed techniques.
1. Gojo Satoru
Gojo Satoru needs no introduction. Wielding the Six Eyes and Infinity, Gojo embodies perfection in the world of cursed techniques. He is so powerful that the author had to imprison him in the Prison Realm during the Shibuya Incident just to give other characters a chance to shine.
Gojo’s death remains one of the biggest debates in manga history. His Hollow Purple technique, which not only destroys matter but erases it from existence, was tanked head-on by Sukuna twice without any logical explanation. Many believe Gojo’s power was never diminished, but he lost due to an unprecedented “plot armor” layer Gege reserved for Sukuna to bring down Gojo’s unmatched dominance.
